Despite fears about our safety in Antigua, the first three nights we spent passed without incident. We had a moment of panic after the plane touched down when our hand luggage was missing but it turned up on a random seat about 5 rows in front of us. We’d organised a private car to take us from the airport in crime ridden Guatemala City to the tourist mecca of Antigua. Here we found narrow, cobbled streets with scattered ruins and churches every few blocks. The city lies 1.5km above sea level and is surrounded by volcanoes and green hills. Our hostel turned out to be dark and damp with too few toilets and our barred window looked out into the corridor. It did have a rooftop bar overlooking the city and free wi-fi which went some ... read more

Ash’s Uncle Paul treated us to a tour of Detroit on the way to Grosse Ile, the island where he and Aunt Maureen live and where Ash’s Mom grew up. Detroit has seen better days. Huge, once elegant, brick houses lie in ruins extremely close to the downtown area. There used to be more but many have been completely demolished and cleared. Block after block of Woodward Avenue shop and office blocks are left empty and boarded up. It’s really sad to see and hopefully they will rebuild and refill the empty buildings. As part of our little sightseeing excursion we pulled into a McDonalds on Mack Avenue to get some refreshments and use the facilities. It was like something out of an 80’s Eddie Murphy comedy, we were the only white people and everyone was ... read more

By the time we touched down in Vancouver we’d managed to convince Emilie to change her flight thus spending 3 days in Vancouver with us. Checked into the YHA Central on Granville Street right in the heart of the city and soon discovered the many Irish bars around. These came in handy for the Rugby World Cup matches and also for eating cheaply. It didn’t take us long to take off on foot and discover Canada Place (the waterfront structure), Gastown and Chinatown. A homeless man offered his assistance to help us find our restaurant (Wild Rice, modern Chinese and very good) but sent us in the exact opposite direction. We’d already given him a dollar before we’d realised, such mugs! Our first impressions of Vancouver are that we really like it but there are far ... read more

We landed in Honolulu, Hawaii, around noon on the day we lived twice. We’d departed Manila at 7pm and arrived earlier that day having spent 9/10 hours in the air. After a mini grilling for Ash at immigration we collected our bags and boarded the bus bound for Waikiki. The lady who sold us our tickets announced that everyone was expected to tip the driver before hopping off. This was to be a theme of the trip, most restaurants included a tip guideline and examples of % calculations with the bill and some, but not all, tour guides mentioned gratuity was not included in the ticket prices. Welcome to America! Checking in to the Ewa Hotel (as in “what-‘eva’” per the lady at the airport) was a tad painful as the poor guy seemed too nervous ... read more

Getting from Singapore to our hotel in Manila turned out to be more interesting than we’d envisaged. First off, a basic error with the terminal (reading the arrival terminal rather than the departure one) resulted in a dash across the building to the sky train, then a shuttle bus to the budget terminal. Luckily, we’d left enough time. We had sandwiches at O’Brien’s Cafe which also offered such mystery Irish items as Aran Island Sauce, Dublin Cheesecake and Irish Recipe Muffins. On our flight with Cebu Pacific we had the pleasure of playing Seat Bingo because ‘Happy passengers make for a happy flight’ (according to Enervon Multivitamins). The air hostesses stood at the front, one with 2 bags of tiles (one for the row number & one for seat letter) and the other had the task ... read more

After our adventures with the glow worms we had a long hot shower (our kind guides had explained the secret behind the glowing worms - they were pooing, which is fluorescent in the dark!) before hitting the road for another epic road trip. This time we had chosen Coromandel Town as our next destination, some 227km away but a lot of it on narrow winding roads hugging the coast line, the last 30 minutes of which was in the dark. We were treated to a beautiful sunset though and as usual Ade did all the driving. The holiday park we stayed in was empty but seemed very nice in the dark. The Coromandel Hotel across the road provided a decent dinner and some tasty local beverages. When we returned to the campsite Ash logged on to ... read more

Wellington was literally a wash out for us. It lashed the whole time we were there, which was less than 24 hours. We did manage to squeeze in the Te Papa museum which was fantastic and definitely deserved more than the hour and a half we gave it. It has many interactive exhibits including a simulated earthquake in a small house, a colossal squid and video of its capture and plenty on the indigenous Maori population and migration of the Pacific Islanders. But the road called and so we hit it early in the afternoon so we could reach Napier by night, and we succeeded. It was a mission though in poor driving conditions. Napier is known for its Art Deco buildings which came about during the rebuild necessary after the 1931 earthquake which levelled most ... read more

New Zealand is an amazing country with breathtaking scenery around every bend and friendly, humorous locals to meet in every town and village. It’s no surprise that so many people migrate here. We covered a lot of distance, 3,600km approx, from Queenstown to Auckland with quite a few diversions in between. On the south island we spent the first week in Queenstown and then drove up to Picton over nine days staying at campsites along the way. It took a while getting used to the cramped space and constantly transforming the bedroom into the living room and back again but we loved the freedom of coming and going as we pleased. Poor Ade shouldered the driving as Ash didn’t like it, getting beeped for holding up traffic being the lowlight for her. After leaving Queenstown we ... read more

Our next stop was Queenstown, New Zealand. As part of the Rugby World Cup build up, Air New Zealand has a very funny safety video featuring the host team, the All Blacks, and ending with a granny streaking down the aisle. We’ve never seen so many people watching a safety video before and everybody was laughing along. It was only 3 hours across from Oz and the last 40 minutes or so we were treated to spectacular views over the Fiordlands and coming into Queenstown. The airport is surrounding by snow capped peaks, simply stunning. We were lucky to have a clear sky on our approach as it would have been a shame to have missed the amazing views. Our hire car shop was located off site so we were collected in the courtesy van by ... read more

After 3.5 years living in Sydney we have finally called it a day on our Aussie living experience. It was great while it lasted but the long journey from home and the difficult time difference finally persuaded us to take the leap and move on. Australia was originally meant to be a stepping stone to the Americas on our journey so we’re finally hitting the road again. First leg - down to the bottom of the Land Down Under. After moving out of our flat in Balmain East we took up Carol and Brian’s kind offer to put us up for our final weekend in Sydney. This included regular feedings of Carol’s divine cooking and a lunch at Moo Burgers in Newtown. Yummo! Thanks for your hospitality guys, we had a fabulous time!! First stop was ... read more
