BoracayJames Dylan Part II: Boracay The trip was short and after just 45 minutes, we landed in Caticlan, a small "banana republic" airport with a very short runway lined by coconut trees. It was so short that when we landed, the pilot immediately hit the brakes, and when we slowed enough to turn around, I could look down and see the grass at the end of the runway directly under my window. Caticlan is located on the large island of Aklan, which also has a larger airport in Kalibo, about 90-minutes away. Luckily I did my research before buying the tickets and saw Caticlan is about 5 miles from Boracay and chose it. Many travelers I talked to, when booking their flights, were not told about Caticlan by the travel agents, so they had to endure ... read more

The Philippines certainly packs a punch when it comes to natural wonders: spectacular beaches, beautiful mountains, awesome volcanos, stunning lakes, superb diving and colourful aquatic life - d'you see that whale shark to your right?? - so we didn't need much arm-twisting to persuade us to linger for over five weeks (our longest stay in any country so far) and sample the local delights.... The Philippines is a vast archipelago (7,107 islands) probably most famous (to us) for it's girlie bars, political corruption and Filipino nurses who prop up the NHS. Over 90% of the population are Christian (82% Roman Catholic) and the majority of people speak English. A former Spanish colony (since 1565), the USA bought the islands from the Spanish (after defeating them in war) for $20 million, then granted independence in 1935. ... read more

Early Brekkie and the Trek Back to Manila Breakfast was too early for the stomach, but with longganisa on the menu, I was happy. Xandra, Sam, Baba, and my mom came to meet us, but they could not eat because their breakfast was not ready at their resort. Xandra was just coming over to see us off. We left at about 8am, taking a jeep, boat, and van back to Kalibo airport. Linus and I sang songs throughout the 1.5-hour van ride, subjecting our co-riders to TV theme songs, musicals, and hard rock ballads. It certainly made the time pass for us, though I can’t vouch for our fellow travelers! We were early for our flight and they would not let us into the terminal, so we hung out outside and my mom went shopping for ... read more

Up with the Sun At 5:15am, Leroy gently wakes me up and asks if I still want to join Jamie and Linus to watch and photograph the sunrise. I get up and look outdoors to make sure the sky is still dark. By the time I pull on my clothes, brush my hair and teeth, and wash my face, the sky is light outside. No worries, the sun rises behind some hills so I haven’t really missed too much. I walk outside and immediately spot them on the beach, cameras and tripod in action. My Olympus Stylus 300 is just a pocket camera, simple and old. I get some bad shots at first, then turn the autoflash off and try to hold my hand steady. Lucky for me, I’m with two other people who are yammering ... read more

Total indulgence: Meat and rice breakfasts before beach massages This morning, we wake up and head down to the breakfast buffet that is included in our hotel rate. It is everything you want a Filipino breakfast to be - a man makes eggs to order and the rest is self-serve. Three kinds of rice - white, red (like brown rice), and fiesta rice (fried rice with other stuff in it, like eggs and onions), beef tapa, corned beef, vienna sausages, daing nab angus, other fish, other meats, pancakes, fruit, toast, cereals, juices, etc. One could really go crazy in this kind of place. I, of course, put some meat, rice, and eggs on my plate and sit down. Fruit is great in the Philippines, but I love mangoes and they are incredibly sweet here. I can’t ... read more

So we ( Natalie, Sarah, and myself) decided to break up the school year with a little vacation to the Philippines. It was quite an experience. It was a mission to get to Boracay, but definitely worth it. First we began with a two hour flight to Manila, followed by a taxi ride from Manila international airport to Manila domestic airport. Then an hour flight to Catilan. Then a tricycle ride to a ferry and finally after the ferry another tricycle ride. Everything is very cheap, but you always need cash because they charge you for everything. For example, there was a P20 environmental charge for the ferry boat and a P750 terminal charge, etc. Once we got onto Boracay Island, we stayed in Station 3 at Angol Point. We rented a cottage on the ... read more

Filipino Breakfast and Airport Hassles Our plan is to be at the airport at 8:30am, so we get up before 7am and are ready to go by 7:45am. We walk down and Vit has prepared a monster spread for breakfast - chicken longganisa (chicken sausages), SPAM, daing na bangus (marinated, fried milkfish), scrambled eggs, red rice (kinda like brown rice), vienna sausages, toast, and ponkan (a type of orange) juice. It was delicious! Brings me back to my childhood days. I love Filipino breakfast because they’re basically like lunch! I have come to love American egg breakfasts too, especially since they are healthier if you avoid all the hash browns and jams, but it really brings back memories to have this kind of breakfast. Jamie, Vit, my mom, Leroy and I eat leisurely and then head ... read more

Lined with palm trees, white powdery sandy beach with crystal clear blue/green water is a must visit place in the Philippines. They say you really haven’t seen Philippines if you haven’t set foot on the beach of Boracay and seen the spectacular sunset. Hundreds of tourists and locals all flock to the beach as the night falls to witness the sun’s dying blaze. Boracay is a tourist mecca. There’s so many delightful things for people to do… from island hopping, exploring caves, bar-hopping, shopping and water activities such as jet-skiing, wind-surfing & snorkelling to name a few. We booked a holiday package to Boracay through Philippine Airline which includes return flights, accommodation and daily breakfast at the Boracay Tropics Resort and coach/ferry transfers. We arrived in Kalibo Airport ... read more

If you say Bora most likely that you will figure out what the place look like. Well Boracay is situated in the Southern part of Philippines in Caticlan. It is an island that offers a great white sandy beach with a modernized hotels and shops. I’ve visited this place in 2003 where is not that much populated with shops though the “The Mall” was already open. But in 2007 when I revisit the place there are more shops and new big hotels are under construction. I wonder how it looks like before 2003, my friend who used to worked in Boracay, has mentioned to me that the island before was not modernized and the transportation is hard even the roads are not develop. But now it has all change, roads are cemented, new businesses has opened ... read more
