Background: The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected President and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Philippines attained their independence. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986, when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile and installed Corazon AQUINO as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel RAMOS was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph ESTRADA was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, in January 2001 after ESTRADA's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and widespread demonstrations led to his ouster. MACAPAGAL-ARROYO was elected to a six-year term in May 2004. The Philippine Government faces threats from armed communist insurgencies and from Muslim separatists in the south.

October 1st marked the 60th anniversary of the Peoples Republic of China. Mid autumn festival also landed at the same time so we got eight entire days off of school. Even though weve only been in China for about 2 months, it is already feeling pretty comfortable so I was definitely ready for a new trip. My friends and I decided early that because this is the most heavily traveled time of year in China, we would avoid the even larger than usual crowds and leave the country. We had our hearts set on going to Lombok; a tiny island near [View Full Entry]

Reef Retreat Asia » Philippines » Boracay
It has been a lovely extended weekend for me and a couple of my co-workers, snorkeling, island hopping, skim boarding, drinking cocktails, eating lots of food and simply just enjoying the cold evening breeze by the shore. This was the best time to once again take the much needed break from work. I was actually here almost at the same time last year. We were originally to arrive at Caticlan Airport which would have saved us so much time but the airport was temporary closed and all the flights were re-routed to Kalibo. It was due to an accident that happened [View Full Entry]

If you cannot have lunch or dinner in Manila why not take a Coffee break in Boracay?.... Boracay.the prestine beach, long stretch of white sand...the place has been the talk of the town since 2003 when I graduated college. it has been my dream to go there. Finally after the long wait I was in Boracay last Friday September 11, 2009...six years in the making.Yes! the prestine beach and white sand were true. Taking an hour flight via Sea Air Airlines at Manila Domestic airport on a 32 seater plane. I was nervous because of the small aircraft but the smooth [View Full Entry]

Lonely Planet Souvenir Shop on Boracay's white beach Lonely Planet has a very nice store on the main white beach. However, their staff is very dull. They are not that interested to sell and behave as if it would be better if there were no customers in the shop. I guess it is like this because they do not own the store unlike most of the other stores on the beach. But the clothes are very nice and worth the money. Very expensive but as I said worth it. One of the most beautiful beach towns we've ever visited - Boracay - a short flight south from Manila in the Philippines. The first day on the beach was beautiful - the perfect day topped with an amazing sunset. The second day was overcast and rainy - and the last day, Wednesday, June 24, we woke up to Tropical Storm Nangka (or Feria as it is locally called.) We may be here a day or two longer than expected, but hopefully we get to enjoy another few hours of nice weather before it's time to fly to Manila. Check out a [View Full Entry]

Cebu Pacific budget airline flight from Manila to Boracay (Caticlan)
Plenty of boats for sailing tours
An amazing sunset

Arriving in Boracay last Saturday was a lot easier said than done. There are two airports near the island: Kalibo and Caticlan, the latter being closer (only 5 min from the airport to the harbor and the one at which we were supposed to arrive). Our flight was supposed to come in at around 16:30, giving us enough time to get to the island and search for a place to stay. Didn't happen though... Because of bad (rainy!) weather, our flight was delayed so we didn't leave Cebu until 17:30. We also ended up flying into Kalibo Airport, about an hour [View Full Entry]

Finally we have arrived in Boracay. We learned some good lessons on the way here. No. 1 rule - don't just believe what he/she says because of his/her uniforms. We were waiting for a shuttle from Int' airport to Domestic airport. But nothing happened for about 15 min. We saw 2 pilots standing next to us. "Is this a shuttle stop?" "mmm....I don't think there is a shuttle in the airport" Ok, so we took the taxi. The taxi driver asked us whether we had tickets. Yes we do!! We fly with Zest Asia. After a short journey, he said "274 [View Full Entry]

Checking In
Delayed Flight, Nap at the Airport
Available Plane for Kalibo

Sorry for the rediculously long time it took me to write this. This was an amazingly relaxing vacation with jaime (one of the loves of my life! hehe) We flew into Manilla, and were sitting there in the parking lot outside until 3 in the morning when they opened up the airport. It was hot and muggy. Once we got into the airport there was NOTHING there. We roamed around and dodged the creepy stares from the locals. our flight left at around 0530, and we couldn't schedule an earlier one. We sat around even longer, watched a guy walk through [View Full Entry]

Our first stop in Manila was the Mall of Asia. We heard it was the largest mall in Asia and it was certainly the largest mall that we have seen in Asia. I am simply guessing but it was about 10 times the size of Select City Walk in New Delhi. I have been wanting to pick up a traveling sized computer and I found an HP Mini there for about $480.00. That is about $100 more than I can get one for in the USA, but I won't be back in the USA for at least 6 months. I am [View Full Entry]
