After about forty five days of globetrotting, my body was telling me it was time for a break. On Christmas Eve, we arrived into Bangkok at the Dream Hotel and I spent the better part of three days ensconced in my room sucking down fluids, watching movies and trying to get well. I had to make an exception to venture out of the hotel on the night after Christmas to meet up with Vegas buddies Adam and Oleg who were looking mighty tanned and relaxed - fresh off a ten day stint from the island of Koh Samui. They probably added a few more weeks to their lives by rejuvenating from their island time at the Bangkok Oriental, one of the worlds top luxury hotels - serving world leaders, heads of state, dignitaries, and my friends ... read more

Hello Again - I left Puerto Galera after several great dives; took a 4-hour public commute to Roxas; spent the night. The next day, I traveled by boat to Borocay. The trip was not too exciting and was uneventfull, except for watching the local 10-13 year old boys from Roxas jumping 30 feet off the ferry boat to dive for your spare pasos. Boracay is quite the Philippino and international destination. The beautiful 4km white sand beach is palm tree lined and full of bars and international restaurants. People sail board on the east side of the island. The beach front and resorts have recovered from the last typhoon. Inland is still somewhat recovering, but unless the tourists rent mountain bikes and cruise around as I did, they are not likely to know, except for the ... read more

If we have learnt one thing about travelling in the Philippines, it has been to be flexible and allow yourself plenty of time. Our original plan for here, was to hit as many islands as possible. After experiencing super-typhoon Durian on Mindoro and the rocky outrigger ride back to Luzon, this all went out the window. I point blank refused to get back on another outrigger and I wasn't hearing any complaints from Ed either. So we went North and loved it. However, everywhere we went the Filipinos kept asking us had we been to Boracay yet? The undoubted pearl of the Philippines and ONLY the 4th best beach in the world! Who comes up with these lists? Still we figured we had to see what the fuss was all about and at least it would ... read more

For Christmas Uncle Dave decided to treat us to a flight to Boracay (thank you very much). Boracay is a tiny island 35 mins flight on a wee plane south of Manila. It's famed for it's mile-long white sand beach which is so fine that it doesn't get hot even under the tropical sunshine. The island was hit by a typhoon just a few days before we arrived, but the massive local clean up operation had been in full swing from the minute the wind and rain stopped so we didn't see the worst of the damage. The only major obvious problem that we saw was there being no power for most of our stay (although our hotel had a generator so we were not really affected by this). Our hotel consisted of wee semi-detached huts ... read more

Arrived in Manila yesterday afternoon, what an amazing city. It is even better than i remembered it last time and already wish that i was staying longer. As soon as i got off the flight it was the usual immigration mayhem, a long que and a slow officer. Why is it that what ever que you get in its the wrong one! Anyway out into Manila i step, crazy city, sums it up. After being in Bangkok a while you think that the crazy driving and near misses every 5 meters are standard, then you get into a philipino taxi and its a whole new level of madness. Had such a lovely day, went to my friend Sam's house in Makati, it is so good to be back with my english friends again, its not the ... read more

boracay island was a very pleasant change from manila. almost everyone i talked to had only good things to say about it. i thought it would be too touristy and the beaches would not be everything that they have been famed to be. i was wrong. luckily, i arrived one month before the tourist season starts there, so there was only a small crowd of people. the main destination there is white beach. it is a huge stretch of powder white sand and crystal clear water. it is also where almost all the bars and nightlife is. very good food there too. it is more expensive there than the rest of the philippines, but still very budget friendly for US standards. the people there were very kind and there was a mix from around the world. ... read more

As a result of the timing, a national Korean holiday known as Chusuk (similar to Thanksgiving) happened to fall on the weekdays, meaning I had the whole week off! My friend Jenny and I planned a trip to Boracay to take advantage of this rare holiday. MANILA We arrived in Manila on Sunday afternoon and rode a company taxi into the main city. FYI for future travelers en route to Manila, metered taxis are not allowed in the international airport b/c they are potentially dangerous and notorious for ripping people off, so only company taxis are allowed. Since they have a monopoly on the airport, they charge you nearly triple of what a meter taxi would cost. So I suggest that you walk out of the airport and ride a metered taxi (but be smart about ... read more

One jeepney journey, two ferries, one taxi and three motorbikes later.. The Philippines is the perfect place to visit for for island hopping and traveling from beach to beach, just what we need after a New Zealand winter. Of course nothing is ever as easy as it sounds though and despite our determination not to visit too many places and therefore cut down on the traveling it does take a fair amount of time, money and effort to move about this amazing place. On leaving Bacolod we had another epic journey to our next destination, the beach resort of Borocay. The first stop was a ferry to Iloilo City on the island of Panay, we caught a jeepney to the ferry terminal (a barginous 7 pesos) from there it was a mere two hours of hard ... read more

First stop - Boracay Money down: P9750 for 4D/3N stay in Escondido Resort via PAL, airport transfer from Kalibo-Caticlan-Boracay and back, free daily breakfast I arrived at the Centennial 2 airport at around 11:30am of May 8 after much ado with all the traffic in Libis area. I've been in Centennial 1 and it was world class, pero CT2 was better. Ang ganda ng airport. Anyway, my flight was at 12:30 so medyo nagmamadali ako to check in kasi medyo 'tight' kuno ang security ngayon sa airports. As it had always been the case, pansin ko lang na parati na lang akong running late on my flights. Never had I been not hurrying in any of my trips. Babagal bagal kasi eh. We were already in kalibo at 1:30 and took the bus going to caticlan ... read more

Well, what can I say? Bora is Bora - even when it was stormy! Stayed at Station 2 resort La Carmela, shopped for trinkets, learned to skimboard, played with local kids, took photos, sunbathed (if you can call it that), did all things Bora - braids and tats! This is my second time in Bora, the first being nine years ago (I know it’s unforgivable for some but hey, I’ve been around the Philippines, seen beaches many people haven’t even heard about so cut me some slack) and it’s not much different. Still the same Bora vibe - beautiful, liberating, exhilarating - even when the waves are so high you can actually surf and even when there is no beach until 2pm when the tide ebbs. And the best thing about Bora? What happens in Bora, ... read more
