This blog began with my 9 week adventure through SE Asia in 2006. That initial leap into the unknown led to many other life-changing decisions, the largest of which involved moving overseas. After living in America for my entire life, I moved to Bangkok, Thailand on June 30, 2007.

The blog continues as I share about living in Thailand, and traveling, primarily within SE Asia.

August 18th 2010

Although I've been back in Bangkok for a few weeks, I wanted to give a brief recap of my time in Sihanoukville, Cambodia (July 21-24, 2010). Sihanoukville is a port town on the south coast of Cambodia, approximately 5 hours by bus from Phnom Penh. Although the town of Sihanoukville itself isn't on the beach, there are several beaches nearby. The most popular beach for travelers is Ochheuteal Beach ($2 for moto taxi from Sihanoukville to Ochheuteal Beach), especially a section of it known as Serendipity Beach. It's a bit rocky at the Serendipity end of the beach, but there are some great backpacker type places there. I stayed at a flashpacker/mid-range hotel a couple of streets off the beach named Beach Club Resort, but ended up spending most of my time hanging out at The ... read more

Well, it's time for another update. It's almost the end of July, 2010, and I'm in the beach town of Sihanoukville on the south coast of Cambodia. It's my first time here. For those that have read my blog over the years, you may recall I was in Siem Reap, Cambodia during my 9 week adventure through SE Asia in 2006. I loved my time in Siem Reap, but hadn't managed to get back to this fascinating country since then. Well, here I am. Why now? Well, I'm in the middle of a one week break from teaching at KU (Kasetsart University). The school has graduation ceremonies this week for students who finished their studies in February. That has given me an opportunity to do a little traveling. Unfortunately, Saai's teaching schedule is different than mine ... read more

Saai and I spent two nights in Trang with her family. Her family were great hosts, and her mom is an excellent cook. There was a continuous flow of seafood coming from the kitchen…crab, mussels, fish, and prawns. We ate up. But it was soon time to leave… On Thursday (October 15, 2009), Saai’s mom and step-father dropped us off at the pier in Krabi to take a 1 ½ hour ferry to Phi Phi (departures at 10, 1:30, and 3 daily). If you’re heading this way, you need to make sure you get to the correct pier. I believe it’s called the Passenger Port, and it’s approximately 5 km from town - you’ll need transportation there. The boat over to Phi Phi is 400 baht per person (one way) at this time, and 700 baht ... read more

We’re now visiting Saai’s family in Trang (southern Thailand), but I wanted to get a blog update covering our time in Phuket where we celebrated our 1 year anniversary. Yep, it has already been one year! Saai and I chose to return to Phuket, the popular island in Thailand, where we went on our honeymoon. Saai and I really enjoyed our honeymoon on Phuket a year ago, and decided to return after finding another great airline deal with AirAsia. I’ve had some great deals on AirAsia over the last several years, but this deal was one of my best - 1,120 baht for 2 round trip tickets from Bangkok to Phuket. To translate, that is under 35 U.S. dollars. What about taxes, fees, etc? Included. Per person? Nope, total. As is often the case, timing is ... read more

I've done some traveling since my last update. Where? Mostly to destinations within Thailand such as Phetchabun (northern Thailand), Khao Yai and Hua Hin; but, I've also taken a trip to the U.S. to see family & friends. However, there's really too much to cover. So, let's keep it simple... and share about my most recent trip to Ko Samet, an island in the Gulf of Thailand. Due to its proximity to Bangkok, it's a popular destination for those in Bangkok seeking nice beaches with limited time. Although it's fairly close, it's not THAT close. Through public transportation, the trip took approximately 5 1/2 hours from door to door. That's 5 1/2 hours from walking out my apartment door in Bangkok to walking into my resort room's door on Ao Phai beach on the island of ... read more

This blog is still alive, but barely. When was my last update? July 31, 2008. Ok, that’s some serious neglection. But here I am! A lot has happened since my last update. The biggest news is my marriage to Saai. Saai and I got married on October 11, 2008 in Bangkok, Thailand. The wedding was held in a church in the Silom area of Bangkok, and the reception at a nearby restaurant. The wedding and reception both were great. I was thankful to have my family and best man, Chris, make the long trip from the U.S. I know Saai will be able to meet many more of my family & friends when we visit America (April 24 - May 7, 2009) How about the honeymoon? Where did we go? Well, we spent our first night ... read more

July 31st 2008

A couple of months have passed since my last blog. You'd think by now I'd have put together something covering my trip in May to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai (northern Thailand). But, ahh, nope! I haven't done it. The trip overall was good, but it didn't go as planned, or rather, things weren't planned well enough? What do I mean? Well, the original intent of the trip was to make a visa run across the Thai/Burmese border. However, that didn't happen. I never crossed the border. Although there is more to this story, the bottom line is that a visa run wasn't necessary because I was able to get a new non-immigrant B visa (1 year) through my current employer, St. John's College, prior to the expiration of my old visa. I won't get into ... read more

It’s already been about a month since Saai and I visited her family in Trang, a city (& province) in southern Thailand. One month? What’s up with the slow updates??!! Ok, ok..I’ve been procrastinating. These things do take time, and I’ve been pretty busy with other things. What other things? I started my new teaching job at St. John’s (teaching 7th-12th graders), traveled to northern Thailand on a foiled visa run, and there are those wedding plans! So let’s start with Trang… Saai and I flew from Bangkok to Hat Yai on April 12. Although there are direct flights to Trang from Bangkok, the price at the time of our booking was a bit steep so we opted to fly to Hat Yai (2 hour drive from Trang) with Air Asia (3,144 baht round trip = ... read more

Halong Bay is a very popular side trip for those visiting Hanoi, Vietnam. It's a 3 1/2 hour drive between the capital city and this bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Halong Bay contains almost 2,000 limestone karst islands. There are a few islands with lodging for tourists, but primarily the islands are uninhabited, largely due to their topography. There aren't many flat areas to develop, and very few natural sand beaches. The view is striking, however. For those who have been to Thailand's Phang Nga or Krabi provinces, it is very similar. Many tourists opt to see the bay aboard Chinese style "junks". These boats are used by daytrippers and overnighters alike, and they're all over the place. It seems like every travel agency in Hanoi offers trips to Halong Bay, and as I mentioned ... read more

Rain or shine, we were on our way to ride through rice paddies and villages outside Hanoi! Unfortunately for us, it was rain. No matter. Getting a little muddy is a good thing, right? Umm, the key word is little. I'm back in Bangkok now, but there is a lot to cover from the rest of my trip to Vietnam... My last update was on Friday, March 28 from Hanoi, Vietnam. So that brings me to Saturday... Saturday consisted of more wandering through the streets of Hanoi. The Old Quarter isn't big, but it's a confusing maze of streets, and there is a fair amount to see. I went to a couple of markets (Hang Do & Dong Xuan). Both contain food, apparel, silk, dishes, etc, but Dong Xuan is substantially bigger. There were mostly locals ... read more
