Hi! I’m still alive! I know it’s been forever since I wrote. The problem is the longer I go without writing the more things I have to write about and the more daunting the task to write becomes. So I put it off and it has become a vicious cycle. Aaaahh. The week two weeks ago was filled with work at the clinic. I take notes while the Dr. explains everything and when I get home I try to look up some of the stuff that I only know a little or nothing about. Jason, the other volunteer, also shadowed the Dr. with me. We made a pretty good pairing b/c he has worked as a paramedic and could explain all the technical and anatomy terms to me and I could explain a little bit of ... read more

Visiting the old section of Pokhara, Nepal, after watching the sun rise over the Himalayan mountains, we got to vendors selling spices and shoes on the sidewalk. We also watched some of the local Hindu people at a small shrine in the middle of the intersection of somne streets performing their daily pujas (prayers) and decorating statues of a Hindu deity. It occurred to me that the flowers and fruits and oils and candles that are offered to statues of Hindu deities are very similar to the flower garlands and oil that we received as guests arriving in the better hotels in India. The older buildings in the old part of Pohkara are gradually being torn down and replaced with newer, sort of unimaginative Soviet-style buildings. Our guide said it's very difficult to get the ... read more

If you're in Nepal, you really want to feel that you've been to the top of a mountain. We never got to see the Himalayan Mountains the way they look in postcards -- snowcapped mountains with clear, blue skies -- because we were visiting at the wrong time of year and it was too cloudy. Still we did get to see the sun rise over the Annapurna range and the Pokhara valley from a hillside town above Pokhara called Sarangot. Sarangkot has a viewing station which looks over the Pokhara. Sarangkot has a viewing station which looks over the Pokhara valley on one side, and the entire Annapurna range on the other. To get to Sarangot, we left our hotel at 5:30 a.m. and drove for quite a while. After parking, we made a steep ... read more

8 avril: On découvre Pokhara aujourd’hui. "Hello! Where com from? What’s your name? Eat water? (!?!)" que nous cries des ... read more

Pokhara City is probably unlike any other city in Nepal. The area around Pokhara is the place where many trekkers from the United States and other countries begin their Himalayan adventures. There are at least four rivers and a lake nearby that attract rafters and kayakers. To cater to the many western tourists that come there, Pokhara is filled with hip restaurants and bars, expedition outfitters, bookstores, CD stores, camera stores, money exchange places, etc. We stayed in Pokahra City for a very short time, really spending just enough time to see it and find an ATM for some of the people in our group who were running out of money. Pokhara City was ONLY place we visited in India or Nepal where I found AA lithium batteries for my digital camera -- and even ... read more

A bus ride from Chitwan through several small towns brought us to our hotel near Pokhara, the Fulbari Resort & Spa Hotel. A copy of the Baghavad Vita, sort of like the Gideon's Bible, was in the drawer of the bedside table in our hotel room. The Fulbari Resort is right next to the enormous Seti River Gorge. As usual, our hotel is a striking contrast to the work that lies beyond. The grounds are quite lovely, with grass, flowers, and fish swimming under a little stone bridge and putting their mouths up for food, just like the carps in China. The hotel also has an "infinity" swimming pool, where the water seems to drop off over the edge on the horizon. Spa services include Ayurvedic massages. A few of us got foot massages, quite ... read more

Imagine if you will - one Aussie, one Kiwi, three Polish, four Indians, a handful of Tibetans, five dozen Nepalese, some caged pigeons, a musical busker, eight sacks of rice, insane amounts of personal baggage, and forty crates of fruit and vegetables all crammed into (and on top of) a forty seater bus. Welcome to the public buses in Nepal! From the Indian border to Pokhara it took nearly twelve hours (another overnighter!) to make the 100km trip, along narrow roads that wound steeply through the hills. The bus stopped constantly to load and unload supplies, pick up and drop off more people, stops for meals, and one curious stop to investigate by torchlight a site on the roadside where a vehicle may or may not have plummeted to a grisly demise. We arrived into Pokhara ... read more

I'm off tomorrow to start the Annapurna circuit trek which should take somewhere between 16 and 20 days. During this time I'm pretty sure I won't have access to the outside world, so just in case anyone is trying to e-mail/text me I'm not ignoring you! Which reminds me - I haven't been able to use my mobile in Nepal since I got here, so if anyone has texted me over the last couple of weeks I won't have received it. Also I don't think my phone will be functioning again until I get back into the UK on the 25th April. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to the trek as its supposed to be one of the most amazing in the world - hopefully I'll get a couple of decent pictures too...... read more

Still having a fantastic time in Nepal. Just got to Pokara today from Chitwan National Park. We had a good time there, elephant riding, saw rhinos, peacocks, crokodile and more. From Katmandu we went on a two day rafting down to near by Chitwan. It was so much fun. I'd never gone rafting before and really thought l would die but it wasn't that hard. We stayed overnight on the riverbank in a tent, sang Icelandic and Nepali songs around a campfire. It was the best. Now we're gonna stay a few days in Pokhara and then head back for India. Time sure flyes when you're having fun. ... read more

I arrived into Pokhara after a decent 8 hour bus ride. After my failed attempt at waking up for the 7 a.m. bus the previous morning, I was proud that I not only woke up, but got there 30 minutes early and had a nice breakfast! :) hahaa.. I'm such a lazy ass. On the bus, I met an Australian, Egor, and several Israelis. Egor and I ended up becoming roommates at Nanohano Guesthouse (Rs200/$3 for a clean double). It's not in the main touristy area, but it's a short bike ride, or a nice stroll, away. Sebastian had recommended it, and it lived up to its expectations. It was funny because I ended up meeting four other travelers who had come to the guesthouse based on his recommendations. He's like its ambassador! I was in ... read more
