Kasko Jit (Who won)??? Jantako (The people did)!!!! Today is a wonderful day to be in Nepal, revelling in the jubilation of throngs of civilians who have poured through the city streets. They have won a people's war against King Gynendra, who last night (April 24) at 11.30pm, gave into the demands of the agitating Seven Party Alliance, and announced a democratic parliament would be reinstated by Friday (April 28). The king's third attempt at abating the people's movement since the alliance's nationwide strike was imposed more than 2 weeks ago, came at literally the 11th hour. The biggest demonstration yet was planned for today, when two million people, including the leaders of the agitating parties, were expected to storm the king's Kathmandu palace. It was almost certain to have resulted in a state of emergency ... read more

... read more

Hi there, Friends! Sorry for the long delay. The access road of the information superhighway hasn't managed to penetrate the rugged mountain passes of the Himalayas just yet, so this posting has languished in my primitive offline word processor called a "note book" or some such. Apparently, these were once used extensively for composing. Anyway, I'm going to break this up into two or three installments, to make it a bit more readable. On the morning of Thursday, March second, Eddie, Michelle and I set off for Pokhara by airplane. The linear distance is no more than 120 miles. One might think that such a trip, between the two largest cities in the country (I think Pokhara is number two) would be serviced by a fast, direct road, taking perhaps two, maybe three hours*. (*or one, ... read more

Hi wonderful friends and family! Here's a bit of an insight into my life as ''Miss'', the English teacher at a buddhist monastery. There's more to tell about my other Nepali experiences, but I'll send another email to keep it digestible. Photos to come, also. Thanks for your birthday wishes. The big 2-5 came without much of a bang, unfortunately, and all day I wished I was at home by the barbie with my mates, followed by a dance-a-thon of a night on the town. I was on a bus for half of the day, but managed to get in a couple of beers nonetheless and a meal that wasn't dahl baht. The kids were gems, really making me feel special, buying me small gifts that they would have struggled to afford. I'm about to go ... read more

Je veux ... read more

Happy holidays everyone! Before this brief entry I want to apologize to those I've been meaning to email and haven't been able to, connections here are quite poor and expensive, and I've been busy busy busy arranging travel details, I WILL have more time as soon as I get back to Thailand so expect emails! Sorry again! Leaving Kathmandu I travelled to the small town of Bandipur, a place only briefly mentionned in the Bible (aka Lonely Planet) and which I stumbled upon by chance, catching glimpse of a small advert suggesting travellers break up the Kathmandu-Pokhara march by spending a couple nights in an apparently enchanting hill-top town, with gorgeous views of the Himalaya. Having no real plans for my time in Nepal after deciding that it's too effing cold to do any real outdoorsy ... read more

Having completed our trek Line, Robert and I decided to head to Pokhara for a couple of days to do some relaxing and take advantage of the relatively warm climate. It turned out there was a big street festival on for four days with all sorts going on so that made the trip even better. While there we spent one day doing nothing in particular, one day fishing and one day riding bicycles around the surrounding area. While fishing we did spend half of our time untangling the birds nest of line we created in seconds of opening our fishing line and didn't get a single bite but it was nice to spend a day in the sun, in a rowing boat, relaxing with music playing from my now working mp3 player. ... read more

Namaste, christmas chickens! Said goodbye to the Trangs, Nguyens, Huongs, Tahns and Trinhs of Vietnam about one week ago and miss the random chuckles evoked by signs that read ''Good Frice'' and ''Hung Phat'', but I've now found myself in one of the most beautiful parts of the world. Back to that in a minnie. 'Nam was fun. Was back on a bike three days after the ''challenge'', when Aaron, another ''challenger'' and I rode from the highland town of Dalat to the coastal town of Nha Trang. ''The scenery will take your breath away, because the pedalling certainly won't'', the tour company's brochure touted. Yeah right. I saw my heart beat right out of my chest. Granted, there was plenty of downhill and flat road, but they forgot to mention the hills, the hills that ... read more

So after an arduous 2 day journey out of India to Nepal I finally arrived in Pokhara only to be struck down by food poisoning, never mind... Before the horrific onset of the liquid conditions I did manage to get chatting to a couple of English guys called Gerry and Daren who were in Pokhara obtaining their Paragliding licences', I was exceptionally interested in their accounts of flying and so the seed was sown, I had to give it a try... After recovering I arranged to go trekking around Pokhara in the mountains and foothills of the Annapurna range for 6 days. Bisho, the manager of the Holy Mount Guesthouse where I was staying was great and arranged a guide/porter for me. There was no way I was going to carry my own bag and after ... read more
