Following Cambodia and Thailand earlier in the year, another short trip was in order to ensure that this year's holiday quota was used for interesting purposes. Instead of going on my own, this time I went with my friend from school, Richard. Flying via Helsinki (to keep the cost down) Finnair delivered us in a safe and timely fashion into Delhi, the only downside was that it was 1am in the morning. We grabbed a taxi to Main Bazaar and the look on Richard's face when we got out the taxi was priceless. The filth and squalor was a bit of shock I think but totally as I remembered it. After refuting accusations of picking the worst location possible to stay at and reassuring Richard that the whole of India is in a similar state, we ... read more
Since being back in England for almost a year it was nigh time to go on holiday again i thought. Sadly just a short trip of two weeks this time! It is however an undoubtedly superior feeling to be back in Asia in contrast to get excited about pensions in Guildford. I arrived in Bangkok and spent three nights there visited a few markets, temples and did a bit of shopping. There food is always consistently good in Thailand so whether i ate on the street or in a nice restaurant, it was always impressive. From Bangkok I then journeyed by land to Siam Reap in Cambodia which is where things started to get a bit more interesting! The bus journey on the Thai side was fine, we covered about 300 km in 3.5 hours, entirely ... read more
Lots of sea, sun and great food. A quick week with Malin and Jim before heading home. Well worth the journey. Bali is great. ... read more
After a long and very cold (air con) overnight bus trip from Bangkok to Khao Lak, I arranged to go on a Liveabord dive trip into the Similan Islands. The boat left in the evening of the morning I arrived so I was exhausted when we started out but soon reovered. I have never done a Liveaboard before, it was a brilliant way to dive and see the Similan's. I went with Siam Dive Adventure, their boat is very new and comfortable, the package included 14 dives over 4 days and 4 nights around the Similan Islands. I won't bore you with the ins and outs but everything was good, a great bunch of people on the boat, excellent food, great weather and fantastic diving. My highlight definitly has to be swimming with a 4 metre ... read more
After an overnight bus journey from Bangkok to Nong Khai, I crossed the Thai Laos Friendship bridge over the Mekong River and into Laos. A short bus ride and I arrived into Vientiane, the capital city. After sleeping for most of the the day I had a look around, there is not much too see apart from the river and a few temples. Life in Laos relative to Thailand is a lot slower, for example there is hardly any traffic on the roads and given that Vientiane is the capital you would expect a little bit at least! So as I was on the roof of my hotel drinking some beers when I met a couple of Candian girls called Jen and Corinna, I ended up travelling with them for the duration of my stay in ... read more
Its been a long time... Yeah I know, what can I say? Although I have been in Thailand over two months and whilst I have been stuck on a perfect tropical island most of the time I have not just been anchored to a beach for the entire duration. That is not strictly true but I will try and relay what I have been up to on this this strange little island to the best of my abilities! I have only been to two places so far in Thaliand, Bangkok for 2 days and Koh Chang for the rest of the time. On the outset Koh Chang is a very mellow place that really caters for everyones needs. So apart from trying to go brown on the beach (for those of you who know me this ... read more
So after an arduous 2 day journey out of India to Nepal I finally arrived in Pokhara only to be struck down by food poisoning, never mind... Before the horrific onset of the liquid conditions I did manage to get chatting to a couple of English guys called Gerry and Daren who were in Pokhara obtaining their Paragliding licences', I was exceptionally interested in their accounts of flying and so the seed was sown, I had to give it a try... After recovering I arranged to go trekking around Pokhara in the mountains and foothills of the Annapurna range for 6 days. Bisho, the manager of the Holy Mount Guesthouse where I was staying was great and arranged a guide/porter for me. There was no way I was going to carry my own bag and after ... read more
Ok, I am back in India now! After a massive and cold 30 hour train journey from the pleasantly warm climate of Mumbai I finally arrived in a freezing Varanasi at dawn yesterday. Varanasi is on the Ganges, a river that sources far up in the Himalayas and flows eventually out into the Bay of Bengal through Bangladesh. It is a very large city of over 1 million people with the main attraction to the countless tourists being the Ghats. The Ghats and the Ganges really are very beautiful and colourful, it is like a being in another world and is best seen along with all other visitors at sunrise from a boat. Varanasi is a very holy and spiritual place for Hindu's, they believe that by bathing in the Ganges their sins will be cleansed. ... read more
Copenhagen is home to 1 million people including all the suburbs and is a really cool city. The weather was amazing when I was there which according to Katrine with whom I stayed (my friend from India) is unusual for this time of year. There certainly is plenty to do here, you need a big wallet though as it is even more expensive than London!!! There is a law that no building can be higher than 5 storeys in the city and being that Denmark is virtually all at sea level you don't get many opportunities to see the city from a vantage point. There is however a very tall gothic church in Christian Town called Vorfrelsers Kirke (Our Saviours Church) which was well worth the climb as the views were excellent. It does not look ... read more
The Taj Mahal (meaning crown palace) is situated in the industrial town of Agra about 200km southeast of Delhi in Uttar Pradesh. I was compelled to get up early and see the Taj Mahal at sunrise as this is the best time to see it apparently, I was not disappointed. I entered through the east gate at 6.30 am. The Taj Mahal is the resting place of Emperor Shah Jahan's second wife, Mumtaz Mahal who died during labour. The white marble building houses her tomb and is surrounded by very well kept gardens and a red sandstone perimeter wall that makes an wonderful contrast to the white marble of the Taj Mahal proper. To the west of the tomb is a mosque and to keep the symmetrical balance on the east is a guest house of ... read more
