Having worked in London for the last 5 years I decided to quit my job on the 24th February and go for a little trip. I'm planning to spend a couple of months in France learning French and spending a fair bit of time in the Alps, before heading off to see the delights of South East Asia for a few months until my money runs out...

After the kayaking we had a day to sort ourselves out in Kathmandu and get ready for the next trek - a two week trip into the Everest (Khumbu) region to climb a peak called Lobuche East. We headed off on the morning of the 3rd to get a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla (you can do a walk to Lukla from a place called Jiri, but it would have taken to long) and what a flight it was. The plane fits maybe 16 people, which isn't the scary bit - its the fact that the runway was obviously built my a lunatic - its about 200m long, and built at a 30-40 degree angle - so when you land it helps to slow you down, and when you take off it helps to speed ... read more

I don't have my camera with me tonight so will put some pictures of this trip up next time... Since I got back from the Annapurna circuit I've been reasonably busy again - after a day of chilling we signed up to do some kayaking for 4 days - the first day we went out on the lake in Pokhara for a few hous just to get use to the kayaks - they were a lot smaller and harder to control than any kayaks I'd been in before. However, after 15 minutes of paddling about we were soon trying eskimo rolls - pretty successfully when the guy helped us, and pretty unsuccessfully when he didn't. That night we met up with a couple of folk we had met on the trip - Chris an American ... read more

The Apple Pie Circuit Chris and I got back yesterday from a 15 day trek around the Annapurna range of mountains - its thought to be one of the worlds classic treks and I can certainly see why! I've included quite a few photos here, and I took tonnes more - unfortunately (but understandably) this site forces me to reduce the size of the shots so they aren't as good quality as the 'real' pics. Anyway, my pictures don't do the place justice - no-ones could - the views and people and the trekking is absolutely breathtaking - I'd strongly recommend this trip to anyone - particularly as they are building a road up both sides of the valley, so probably best to do the trek soon... Anyway, I'll not go into everyday of the ... read more

I'm off tomorrow to start the Annapurna circuit trek which should take somewhere between 16 and 20 days. During this time I'm pretty sure I won't have access to the outside world, so just in case anyone is trying to e-mail/text me I'm not ignoring you! Which reminds me - I haven't been able to use my mobile in Nepal since I got here, so if anyone has texted me over the last couple of weeks I won't have received it. Also I don't think my phone will be functioning again until I get back into the UK on the 25th April. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to the trek as its supposed to be one of the most amazing in the world - hopefully I'll get a couple of decent pictures too...... read more

We've spent the last two weeks in Nepal and managed to achieve quite a lot already - and we've got another 6 weeks to go - woohoo! So far I love pretty much everything about this country apart from the state of the food/water supplies, which has basically had either me or Sceats with dodgy stomachs at any given point in time (except today - so far anyway...). We arrived here on Sunday 24th Feb and walked around Katmandu, had some food and got used to Thamel - the area in Kathmandu we were staying in. Its basically the tourist centre of Nepal, and its full of shops selling dodgy antiques, carpets, and an amazing amount of fake north face trekking gear. There are also tonnes of touts trying to sell guiding services and quite a ... read more

It's been a while... I haven't updated my blog for over two weeks now, mostly because I've been climbing in China, and never really seemed to have time (or the inclination) to sit in the internet cafe for an extended period of time. I'm in Kathmandu now, and will be in Nepal for 2 months so should have a bit more time to update this site (apart from when I'm trekking...). Anyway, the last time I updated the blog I was in Cambodia in Siem Reap: since then, I've been in Bangkok for two days, Hong Kong for 2, Yang Shuo for 9, Hong Kong for another 2 and now I'm in Kathamndu. Siem Reap-Bangkok We took a bus trip from Siem Reap to Bangkok, and despite everything we'd heard about this journey being horrendous, it ... read more

February 7th 2007

After 2 days of bus journey from Banlung (I never left my hotel room in Komphon Cham as I was felling too ill, so can't tell you anything about it!) we arrived in Siem Reap. Its a bit of a different experience to the North-East of Cambodia, with more backpackers, more touts, more kids selling postcards/books/pineapples/cans of drinks, more tuk-tuk drivers and definitely more temples. The first afternoon we took a walk around the town, sent some e-mails and arranged what we'd do for the next couple of days. On Monday and Tuesday, we spent our time visiting the temples of Angkor - by bicycle on Monday, and Tuk-Tuk on Tuesday. These were the most impressive temples I've ever seen - and not by any small margin - they are unbelievably impressive. It's impossible for me ... read more

Fuel Efficiency - Cambodia Style We arrived in Banlung after a 6 hour journey through some non-paved roads from Kratie. We took a 'shared taxi' to get there. When we booked it, we were told there would be 4 in the front and 4 in the back and so we weren't sure what type of vehicle it would be - perhaps a mini-bus, we thought. We were wrong. A toyota corolla turned up and we jumped in. We were the only passengers and thought to ourselves 'nice one' - we've got loads of space and Chris managed to bag the front seat to himself. Anyway, 30 minutes later, there were 4 people in the front, 4 adults in the back, two children and three birds. There were two people in the driving seat - one driver, ... read more

Since arriving in Cambodia 3 days ago, I've had the feeling that this is a bit more like it...particularly now I'm in an absolutely amazing place called Kratie. We flew into Phnom Penh on Thursday 25th Jan and went to our accommodation in the middle of the city. The city itself is pretty big, pretty dirty and pretty smelly. But its got character and life, and an amazing amount of energy. It also has the craziest traffic system I've seen on my travels to date. Its a bit like the film Speed, where the bus can't go under a certain speed limit, otherwise it blows up. Except here, there are several thousand mopeds and cars who have to maintain their speed at all costs - I have no idea how we didn't see any crashes - ... read more

Tasty Vientiane

January 28th 2007

After spending another day in Vang Viang, with some more climbing and a fairly unsuccessful multi-pitch climb (we hiked through the jungle for 45 minutes to get to the base of the climb to find it covered in spider's webs and I decided there was no way I was giving it a go), followed by a 'quiet night out' I finally left this town. Mr Sceats was to join me the day after, as he had found more things of interest there than I did... Anyway, Vientiane is the capital city of Laos, but its ludicrously small and friendly - and it was nice to just walk around and enjoy the place. The food here was absolutely fantastic - I ate in loads of different types of restaurants and bakeries, and every time the food was ... read more
