I left gorgeous, cultured, chilled out Louang Prabang 3 days ago, and after a 6 hour (suprisingly painless) bus journey through some awesome scenary arrived in a town called Viang Vieng. This place is described in the guides as a backpackers hangout, and it makes a stop-off point between Louang Prabang and Laos's capital Vientiane. We are going to be here for another two nights as its got some good climbing (I managed to bag another 6b - woohoo!), but thats not what attracts the hordes of backpackers out here. What attracts them, is a massive number of bars where people can get absolutely wasted every night on various substances, and then sit around doing absolutely nothing all day, until they go out and do it all over again. The only thing that seems to break ... read more

Ignorance is bliss That's what i might have asked myself about a year ago - uneducated fool that I was/am I had never heard of Laos, but now I'm sitting in an internet cafe in a very cool town called Louang Prabang thinking that its a pretty awesome place to come travelling. But, I'll rewind a little and mention some of how I got here, as it was a pretty memorable journey in its own right. Your travelling companions can make or break your trip... We left Chiang mai on the 13th, having purchased a ticket to take us all the way through to Luang Prabang. The first part of the journey was a 5 hour minibus ride to the thai border town of Chaing Kong. On the bus we met some travelling companions who we'd ... read more

The End of Relaxation After a couple of weeks of lying on the beach Chris and I decided it was time to do some 'proper' travelling again, and headed up to Chiang Mai in the North of Thailand. The town itself is really nice and very very chilled out. No-one hassles you for anything, yet there are quite a few tourists about and a lot of tourist activities to do. We ended up staying here for 6 nights from the 7th until the 13th January. While we were there we spent a day seeing some of the local temples, did a one day thai cooking course and spent an awesome three days of sport climbing at some cliffs about 45 minutes drive from the town itself. Climbing - shown how it should be done We spent ... read more

I'll update this text later - got to go climbing now! But here's some pictures of Xmas in Thailand. Singapore 19th-22nd Arriving back into Singapore from Indonesia was a bit of a culture shock in reverse - everything was really westernised again and people weren't hassling us all the time to buy fruit/t-shirts/transport/anything else you could think of. My brother came out to meet us on the 20th and after a fairly large amount of shoping to buy some sandles and an evening out for a 'quiet' pint or two, we had to decide where to go next. Our original plan had been to traverl through Malyasia over Xmas and head up to Thailand - unfortunately there was heavy floodingh in Southern Malayisa so the trains weren't running and all the buses were full. We made ... read more

After Sumatra (I've added photos to my previous entry) we flew to Bali which is another of the Indonesian islands. It was amazing how different this place was compared to Sumatra - loads of tourists and every local you meet tries to sell you something - transport, t-shirts, bracelets, hats, fruit, drinks, mats to lie on the beach, blow-pipes, bow and arrows etc etc. So, as you walk along in Kuta you get shouted at from everyone you meet to buy something. Also, the prices for everything was much higher here than in Sumatra (don't get me wrong its still dirt cheap) but the standard of living seems a bit higher as well which is cool. Anyway, we stayed in Kuta for a couple of days which although it has nice beaches and really good surfing ... read more

What a difference a week makes! After spending a few days in Singapore sorting out my Visa for China and generally getting over my jetlag, we set off to spend a few days in Sumatra. We took a boat to Batam (an Indonesian island about 45 minutes on the ferry from Singapore) where we caught a flight to Medan - the difference between Batam and Singapore was pretty massive - nothing is quite as shiny and high and the roads and driving were all a little more like what I was expecting in Asia - although the prices were immediately better - even though we were probably ripped off on our 30 minute taxi ride from the ferry port to the airport, it was still only 50000 rupiah (about 3 quid). We were also the only ... read more

I've now been in Singapore for 24 hours after a reasonably lengthy journey here via london, Doha (in Qatar - near U.A.E fact fans) and Bangkok (unexpected detour as the flight into Doha was delayed) before arriving in Singapore feeling pretty sick of planes.. Along the way I met a few interesting randoms which will hopefully be a theme for the trip - I played top trumps with a welsh-pakistani kid, sat next to guy from Pakistan who wanted to convert me to Islam and met up with 3 outdoor events contractors who were off the Singapore to set up a major light show for the opening of a national gallery. After 24 hours of solid travelling I arrived in Singapore and was met at the airport by Chris who I'll be travelling with for the ... read more

People have been asking what I've been doing over the past 8 months since I quit London, where I am now, and what my plans are. So, to answer, I thought I'd write this quick blog just before I head away for my 'proper' trip. The past 8 months I've been doing loads of mini-trips, some of which I've blogged some I haven't. In between I've been working with my brother for a small company called Unitas and making a wee bit of cash while I'm at home. I've also been doing loads of running (mountain races, roads and cross-country) and a fair bit of climbing in my evenings and weekends. I've included some pics from the various trips I've been on. In summary the last 8 months have panned out something like this: March - ... read more

I went to Canada on 2nd September for a couple of weeks, meeting up with Ryan to do some climbing/drinking/sight-seeing etc etc. I was also over there to see if Vancouver could be a future place to hang my hat... Anyway, there's lots of climbing talk in this entry, so sorry if you don't quite get it, but I know what I'm talking about, so thats all that matters! I've written below what we got up to most days, but thought I'd give a mention now to Big D's in Squamish - absolutely great breakfasts from massive fry-ups to massive fruit bowls to granola and special porridge - me and Ryan stopped eating lunch as we knew we'd get enough here to do us until dinner everyday - and for those who know us, you'll know ... read more

I've been quiet since I came back home from france - mostly because I've been working at home and didn't think a blog about working in Coleraine in an IT company would interest too many folk! ANyway, I've got a couple of updates to make now of a couple of very memorable trips. This one is about the LAMM which is a 2 day mountain marathon for 2 person teams run in scotland each year, and was run this year on the weekend of the 17th/18th AUgust. See link lamm. I wanted to make sure I had the photos here and a few words as it was a bit of an epic weekend for me... I've completed a few mountain marathons before, all of which I've really enjoyed, and I was feeling fit this year so ... read more
