Jaisalmer Ok, so Jaisalmer is probably as nice as it says in the Lonely-Planet guide. But Pete was sick- so we spent our entire time there discussing the symptoms of all the possible diseases we could have. Fortunately the vomitting only lasted a day, so its probably just a parasite that can be sorted out when we come home. Only jokes- Ness ran around getting water, supplies and playing nurse so he's just fine now. When Pete was better we went into the desert for a camle safari/ride. it was raining to start with so we felt a bit silly. But then the weather cleared up and we saw loads of other people on their camels. Ness's camel was yawning and farting loads. That night we stayed in a mud village cos it was too cold ... read more

CK: We get up at 5.45 to go on a 2 day camel trek. After much shopping around we've found a fairly comfortable deal, it seems. Together with a Canadian (joe) and 2 Germans (Claudia and Volker) we zoom in jeep out of town to get to the camel camp. It is still quite chilly and with the wind in the open jeep our thin jumpers are pathetic. When we get to the camp we are greatful for a hott cup of chai and a campfire the camel man has for us. 10 minutes later we watch with ahhs and Ohhs the sunrise. It get warm fairly quickly. We get served a breakfast consisting of toast, boiled eggs and verrry sweet jam. Then the camel man packs up and we mount the beasts for the first ... read more

More pics to follow So, we succumbed to the painful but hilarious camel safari - only for a day and night though. We had heard various stories about taking a camel in the Thar desert but we thought we would give it go. And everything that everyone says about the experience is true in that it's extremely uncomfortable having your legs spread about 3 feet apart, dangling with no stirrups, 7 feet up in the air, balanced on a loads of cushions for hours at a time. But it is also a fantastic experience. We met our guides - Mangelsingh and Hussain early in the morning along with our camels...mine called Rahul, very beautiful, quite shy and very chilled, Monkey, Simon's first camel - who was being kept on a very tight rein - and Bubble, ... read more

So for the last 5 days or so we've been chillin' out not in a blue city, but a golden one. Apart from that minor color difference, from the surface the cities seem the same. Both are dominated by an impending fort, both have similar cubical architecture, and both have hotels with fun relaxed rooftops from which to take in the aforementioned sights. While i loved Jodphur for its color, i like Jaisalmer for its monotone simplicity. Everything seems to have come from the sand of the desert, and the fort itself looks as though it is an enlarged version of a talented child's medieval beach creation. The town here is smaller, and Max and i both agreed that we liked that a lot. There's a quieter air here, a more authentic desert feel, even ... read more

We've both been to India before (seperately about 11 years ago,) and so it's about time we gave our general view of the country. It's mad, manic and you constantly feel like you're under presure. That's not to say that we're not enjoying the whole thing. I will try to remain positive and not sound like an old fart, but it is terribly trying when you're in the middle of a conversation with your wife to be interrupted by someone you've never met before, will never meet again, and wants to sell you some tut. The opening gambit is always something like: - what is your name -hello, what is your country, -come into my shop, just seeing, only looking, seeing is free. Reading these comments back they seem quite harmless but you have the option ... read more

Stasne to hadzalo a par krat ma vyslovene vyhodilo do vzduchu - kedze sofer isiel dost rychlo. ... read more

Its Monday afternoon as i start typing this. And please quote me on this one..... I NEVER WANT TO GET ON ANOTHER CAMEL AS LONG AS I LIVE! Jokes aside we've had a really funny 3 days on our camel safari, let me start from the beginning... We got picked up by Jeep on Saturday morning and drove for about an hour into the desert, til we met Daniel - our camel guide and desert resident who was accompanied by our two camels. Mine was called Pungar, and Jo's was called Gzee Jzuu. I would like to say that over the following three days i built up some kind of rapport with Pungar, but I would say that we had a bit of a love/hate relationship from the start. He loved slamming his big old hooves ... read more
