Have you ever been locked in an ice box that's tied to the back of a pick up truck crusing down a bumpy road for 10 hours? I have. Well not literally, but it sure felt that way. In India they have these things called Sleeper busses. It sounds like a great idea. There's seats on the bottom of the bus and then on top where the luggage usually goes, you can lay down in and sleep the night away. Much better than sitting in a bus and trying to sleep......or so we thought. Our first mini shuttle bus in Pushkar was an hour late. It was freezing out, and since 4.5 months out of 5 of our trip is in the tropics we simply don't have warm clothes thats needed for this place. The 10 ... read more

..w Delhi znalazlem goscia z HC u ktorego trzymam rzeczy, prawdziwy Hindus. Wszedzie slychac: Hello!, Halo!, How are you?, Where are you from? Hotel? Camel Safari? Camel? Helllo!! What is your name... a Hindusy jak zwykle obludne, nieuczciwe i klamliwe (i brudne). z Camel / Jeep Safari wybralismy MotorSafari, juz pierwszego dnia pozyczylem motor. W jednej z nich ... read more

It would appear that is as much of a story about getting to each place as there is to each of the cities themselves. And the trip to Jaisalmer is no different, but I’ll keep this one short. Basically imagine being on a bus for 14 hours traveling through the night on a road in the desert, that’s not made but currently under construction. I felt like a piece of salt being thrown around in a damn shaker with no way out. Well that’s the trip, plus throw in a change of bus at 4am in the morning and a little hanging around, brilliant. In summary, it was bumpy, cold with little to no chance of shut eye. Just what you want when you arrive at a new city, 10am in the morning to be pounced ... read more

Arriving in a dark and cold Jaisalmer at five in the morning off the overnight train was pretty unpleasant, on top of this we didn’t know if the hotel booking we had made online had worked properly (it hadn’t) and there was a man in the middle of the road flagging down rickshaws and making people pay a ‘tourist tax’. Or rather trying to, our driver wasn’t having any of it and drove straight past then man. It wasn’t that we would have minded paying a tax (it was after all incredibly cheap, 20 rps each I think) but rather that creeping up on people in the dark and trying to get money out of them does seem somewhat unorthodox. The bonus however of arriving at that time in the morning however was when we had ... read more

At first I was a little skeptical about the idea of taking a camel trip into the desert. It just didn't seem like a very enjoyable thing to do! In fact it turned out to be one of my best experiences yet. And having never ridden one before I hadn't realised just how wonderfully charismatic camels can be. There were three camels on our trip - Rocket, Djoomra and Pepsi, each with very individual looks, behaviour and temperament. Djoomra, the oldest, had an air of grace and experience about him accompanied by a distinctly grumpy old boy mood. Pepsi was younger and darker, was in training and threw tantrums whenever he didn't like being told what to do. My camel Rocket was possibly the slowest camel in all the greatness that is the Great Thar Desert. ... read more

From Pushkar I went back to Jaipur to catch the train to Jaisalmer - a small town with a beautiful fortress in the desert not far away from the border to Pakistan... Having 3 days time there I spent one day exploring the village and the next day I went on a camelsafari for one and a half days which was really good fun. Near the fort-entrance I found the "government authorised bhang-shop", where I purchased some "special cookies" that made my safari very special indeed... :-) The camelmen were really funny guys with good humour, singing traditional songs as well as fun-stuff in the evening around the fire... Sleeping under the clear sky in the desert, bright stars and a fresh breeze - simply beautiful. ... read more

... read more

Arrived in Jaisalmir, Rajastan after a 19hour sleeper train from Dehli. It was really bizarre entering a desert town after being in the jungle. The city is in the middle of the Great Thar Desert and in the centre of town is a giant sandstone fort, rising out of a hill. Basically looks like a giant sandcastle. All the buildings are made of sandstone and look golden in the sun. We're on the tourist trail though, so prices are exspensive and their are lots of middle-aged western couples wandering about. This is kind of a relief, but also annoying as you get a lot of hassle from shopkeepers etc. Have to mention our 3 day camel trek: We imagined clear blue skies, riding across the desert in the boiling heat. But the first day it was ... read more
