Dial-up connection to the internet today - I'd completely forgotten what this is like! Images are turned off, and pages are loading sloooowly. End of our first week in India - feels like much longer since we've been on the go since we got here. We said good-bye to our driver at the entrance to the bazaar in Jaisalmer, feeling ready to strike off on our own! We're in the desert! The drive from Bikaner to Jaisalmer was long and the roads were empty- we left at 7:00 in the morning and arrived at 12:30 or so in Jaisalmer. The scenery is what you would expect - flat and sandy with some brave bits of greenery poking through. Lots of army bases in the area too. Jaisalmer is beautiful - a smaller city, golden from the ... read more

Posledne dva dni boli vcelku nabite udalostami. Vcera rano sme len absolvovali rychlikovu prehliadku stareho mesta v Jodhpure plus sme prebehli miestnu pevnost (je odtial naozaj nadherny pohlad na Blue City) a uz sme frcali smer Jaisalmer. Rychlostou asi 2km/h sme sa ... read more

Jaisalmer is a beautiful city with a sandstone fort on the edge of the Thar desert. We managed to get ourselves a hotel inside the fort with a great rooftop view across the city, where we managed to catch the sunset on a first night. Our main reason for coming here though was for the camel trekking in the desert. We booked ourselves on to a two day trek with a night in the desert amongst the sand dunes. So the morning came and we met our group of camel trekkers, half of which were other backpackers for England. The rest from various countries across Europe. We were driven out by jeep to meet our camels and our camel drivers. Each of us having our own camel for the entire trek while the camel drivers (including ... read more

We arrived in Jaisalmer after taking the train from Jaipur. Our first experience with the trains since we decided to go it alone and ignore peoples constant requests for our money in exchange for the air conditioned car tours. Hopefully we can now escape the constant trips to the overpriced tourist emporiums! Caroline managed to get a silk shirt made for at one for a high price then told them she didn't like it when she realised how much she was being ripped off and we walked off leaving on very good terms... So anyway, the train journey was an eye opening experience. We arrived at the station 22:30 and found there was a hour and a half delay on our train. There were people lying everywhere, smells where smelt and a few rats spotted. As ... read more

Well we waited around for an extra couple of days in Jaipur to make sure that this factory we bought some stuff from actually sent it and then finally moved on to Jaisalmer. Sand In The Desert? Our second journey on a sleeper class train was not quite as smooth however I think it may have been an isolated incident. Hopefully. We got on the train in Jaipur at about 1:30am for a 12hr ride and everything was fine and dandy till we got out into the desert. About 8hrs into the journey the sand and dirt became increasingly present and the bars on the windows do very little to keep it out. The train kicks up quite the dust storm. We found that there are windows that can be pulled down over the window but ... read more

After a horribly emotional goodbye from the crooked Jaipur Rickshaw guild that left both parties quite angry, frustrated and bitter (their stalking and scheming grew unbearably tiresome) Jordan and I finally escaped their scheming ways (along with the rest of Jaipur) and boarded a train heading west across Rajasthan to the city of Jaisalmer. It’s quite difficult to get the names of all these places in India straight and the process of buying train tickets isn’t all that simple, but thanks to the creative shopkeeper next to our hotel in Jaipur (who had an excellent assortment of everything any traveler might need) we managed to score train tickets on short notice. Our train however, had different ideas and decided to show up hours late on a different platform. Even Jord with his seemingly advanced train expertise ... read more

Am currently just enjoying my last few hours in the town of Jaisalmer in far west Rajasthan. I have actually spent a little longer here than I foresaw due to a late decision to take a trip out into the desert for 3 days on a camel with a couple of Canadians I met on the journey to here from Jaipur. It was early on Wednesday morning that the trip began as we were ferried out 40kms into the desert by jeep where we met up with our trusty steeds and camel boy Daniel. I say trusty steeds - the one I ended up with hadn't actually been 'broken in' yet and was the most obstinate, stubborn and single-minded camel of the group and often didn't pay any notice as to which direction I wanted to ... read more

Made it; an 8hr local bus ride, great result given my earlier belt of food poisoning. The day was steaming; it felt like you were sitting in a sauna especially when stopping for traffic and picking up passengers. When I got up it looked like I had peed down the back of my pants; my arse to behind my knees was WET from sweat, nasty. This is potentially too much information, but I think it accurately portrays what a hot box that bus was. We arrived at our Haveli in Mandawa around 4.30 and the bus ride turned into a distant memory; the Haveli was gorgeous! The rooms surrounded a fresco painted courtyard depicting maharajas and Hindi gods, there were antiques, little enclaves and a roof terrace where we had dinner. It reminder me a little ... read more

Hi Everyone The journey to Jaisalmer was uneventful and not as long as the last, just 4 hours traveling through dry and dusty country side, although there had been heavy rain and we had to take a diversion to get through to the cityof Jaisalmer. Jaisalmer’s fort is home to many people, unlike the fort at Bikaner which is really a museum. We stayed within the old city walls in a Havelli(Mansion), not quite as comfortable as the last place but still very good.. Early next morning, we went out and rashly booked bus tickets on to Jodhpur the next day and a camel safari that evening! Bus tickets because they were cheap and the camel safari because that’s part of what you do when you visit Jaisalmer. First though a visit to the fort and ... read more
