You arrive at the desert and what you don't expect is rain but that's exactly what we got... The rain put an end to our ambitions of a desert camel trail and stained all our photos of this "golden city" with a dull grey sky but that didn't stop us from admiring this wonderful sand coloured fortress town. It did dampen spirits a little though and on the back of some rough gastric problems in Jodhpur, we were generally at a low point as things were seemingly unravelling at the end of the trip. I think it was safe to say, we were happy that home was approaching... It's a shame we met the town at a low ebb as the place is stunning - its ramshackled, sandstone beauty is something to behold. Most visitors will ... read more

The fourteen and a half hour train ride to Jaisalmer wasn't too bad, as I managed to more or less sleep for about nine of them. Unfortunately one of the windows in our bay couldn't be securely shut, and when I woke up everything was covered in a very fine sand. There were also ants all over me and my luggage, but they didn't seem to be the biting kind so no complaints. Most of the people left on the train for the last few hours were military (there's a major military presence out here, since it's close to the Pakistan border), other tourists, and a few touts from Jaisalmer looking to snatch up people with no reservations or to change the minds of people who do have them. No matter how many times I told ... read more

So we started bright and early gently riding into the countryside, after being surrounded constantly by people it is a blessing to be in the middle of nowhere with nobody in sight for miles around you. There are 4 of us and 3 camels, Me on Murea, Kawena on Rocket and the guys on Hilton. Amin is a 22 year old champion jockey and safari driver and Deu is a 24 year old exceptionally clever young man who has never been given any of the opportunities we take for granted in the UK. If he had been privy to the same standards of education that we have in the west he would be brilliant in whatever field he chose to take. around 12.30 we stopped under the shade of a tree to cook our chapatti’s, veg ... read more

We practically based our whole planning for the Asian leg of our journey on getting to India in time before it gets to hot, and most importantly, getting in a decent desert camel safari. Apparently in April it can get as hot as 48 degC and by May giant pythons slither out of their underground holes in the sand for their Summer break. At this time in March however, there was nothing like that to contend with. We had a 35km jeep ride from Jaisalmer - which is itself in the middle of the Great Thar Desert - to a spot near a small village even more in the middle of the desert. We had three extremely nice guides: Khan 1 was young and friendly, Khan 2 who was old and friendly and -sorry I can't ... read more

All text was lost due to sever crash, but now recovered... Even briefer entry this time! Actually back in the UK for 5 days to update our visas. Fly back out tonight to Mumbai, stay there one night and meet Keeley, Claire's niece the following day. Then the three of us fly down to Goa, where Keeley is staying with us for three weeks. Just spent a couple of weeks in Rajasthan, and had a fantastic time. Had a car and driver for most of the time, and stayed in Jaipur, Pushkar, Bikaner, Jaiselmer, Jodhpur, Ranakpur and finally Udaipur before driving down to Ahmedabad for the flight to Mumbai and then home. Got covered in paint in Jaiselmer for Holi, Claire nearly stepped on the holy white rat in the rat temple in Deshnok, both nearly ... read more

Xavier and I arrived in India on Saturday night. After working our way through the airport crowds we saw our names on a card (1st time I've ever had that... so cool!) and found our driver that would take us to our hotel, a shady looking character, who turned out not to be a shady character after all. He led us out of the airport past many other shady looking characters. Walking through the carpark we were stopped by an official in combat fatigues who talked down to our driver and interrogated him about what he was doing with us. Our driver had to show him the print out of our email booking and subserviantly explain that we had booked the hotel and he was taking us there. Many times. Eventually the guy let him go ... read more

Our anticipated driving time from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer was to be 7 1/2 hours in total. We were not looking forward to it. However, it turns out the trip is a mere four hours. 300 kms in India should take more -- we average less than 40kmh so far on the trip. How could a 75kph be possible? Well we found out. Jaisalmer is 120 kms from the Pakistan border. Along the road from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer, we passed countless military vehicles, barracks, firing ranges and so on. So, the road -- a mostly empty one through increasingly barren but wildly beautiful desert -- is in impeccable condition. Fresh paved sections abound, two wide lanes all the way and largely straight. It was a dream. We hit speeds of 100 kmh -- flying, we were. Our ... read more

Something seems to have shifted as we have made our way through India to our third big region, Rajasthan. It feels as though we have been through the tougher part and are now sailing along much more easily. Like eating your spinach first, and saving dessert for last. I last left off with us anticipating another train station. After Katni, our enthusiasm for it was low. Happily, the station in Jaipur was pleasant enough -- yes, the requisite beggars -- but airy and much less intent. We had three young hoods stop and ask, of course, "Where you from lady?" and proceed to tell us that the kind young man who had escorted us to the station was a "very bad man". Of course he was nothing of the kind. While I have stuffed his name ... read more

Yes a week has passed now.... No great hassles. The driver is nice enough, a bit controling at times but we can manage him. So now we have experienced so many thing theres no way of beginning the tale. We've seen elephants, camels, beggers, forts, temples, desert, desert sky, slept under the stars in the desert, danced with locals, played dress up and many more wonderful things. It hasnt been all effortless thought, I've had stomach problems for 3 days and for example and of course the people just wont leave you alone. YOu always see their money hungry eyes everywhere you go....to them you're just a big lumb of money. BUt India is very nice....but I wont say I'll miss it when I leave.... ta ta for now...... read more

From where I left off in Jaipur I've had a very good day and properly the worst day of the trip by far. Firstly the good day, was a little nervous about getting a 13 hour night train and didn't know what to expect and have heard some bad thing about them like things getting stolen etc The train was delayed by 2 hours which is the norm apparently so started talking to a couple from Switzerland. The were going to the same place but the poor girl had got a bug that day and wasn't looking to good at all.. I'm still not sure if they made that train because the last I saw them just as I was hopping on she was on hands and knees being sick over railway track. I remember thinking ... read more
