The train ride from Delhi to Jaisalmer is my longest train ride so far. The normal duration is 20 hours, but it took us 23 hours. We almost missed it, so we were a little stressed but relieved at first. Fortunately, we shared seats with a nice Spanish couple. We expected the journey to be long (which it was) and boring, but somehow time went by easily thanks to a little "entertainment". We started exchanging experiences, so I told him my Srinigar story and how I feel like a www... an Indian guy who was sitting right across me had overheard the conversation and suddenly told me with a strong voice to stop talking about India like this. For more than half an hour we were arguing on the topic of the cheating that goes on ... read more

It's Monday morning, and thankfully - for the first time in days, I have my day to myself - rather than being guided around constantly. I really do feel emotionally drained a bit - but not because of the trip particularly, but I think I am used to having a lot more time on my own than has been possible for the past few days. The trip started on Friday morning. Deepak picked me up, all dressed up, the promised 4 bottles of whisky in his boot - and off we went. I recognised a lot of Delhi's streets as we ploughed through the traffic, but slowly we headed out of town - and Deepak was good at pointing out things that were actually of interest to me - jeep loads of commuters heading out of ... read more

We started our bus trip. Already late but I was happy of leaving Delhi (still anyway had to get back there to catch my flight to Kathmandu). The bus ride was allright. On the way we stoped couple of times for brakes, and to get some snacks. I spend most of my time on the bus talking to the brazilian girl. As I found out she was going to Agra for one, two days to visit Taj and places around it. After she would head to Indian Himalayans for 16 days trek which would finish at her Yoga Master town, where she would join yoga-meditation camp for couple of weeks. She was really spiritual person, a lot of different then me, thanks to what we had amazing conversations about life. The bus journey was almost over ... read more

Leaving in the late evening from Udaipur we took one very long bus journey across Rajestan to Jaselmere only a short distance from the Pakistan border. We had several ordeals to get there - including a 4am bus change, what we believe was bogus tourist officer collecting a small 'entry tax', a circus of hotel touts where we were delivered and a hotel change after going to 'a bad place'. Eventually and completely exhausted we settled into a great room with a window out the side of the huge and ancient fort city walls. The place had sprung out of the dessert centuries earlier being the trade route with the west and has remained a stronghold to the present day. Now the city is the centre of much of India's military might, where you see the ... read more

I've been in India now for five days. It's been overwhelming here. I've seen things that I have never seen before. I've seen things that were interesting, strange, beautiful, and a lot of gross. **Delhi** I saw the red fort. It was huge and masculine. I saw a man taking a dump (ddung) on the sidewalk. It made me want to barf (oh bite). **Bikaner** I saw another fort. It was called Junagarh Fort. This thing was a serious pleasure palace. There were swings inside gold covered walls. The tiles on the floor were from Italy and the mirrors all over the walls, kinky, were from Belguim. This guy was a serious pal of the Brits so they gave him an airplane. It was a World War I Bi-plane. **Jaisalmer** It's called the gold city. Look ... read more

Back to gorgeous Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, to see the brothers again and to lounge about on the Shahi's rooftop restaurant, just looking at the fort. I love this place - just about the furthest west you can go in Rajasthan before hitting Pakistan......We had a brilliant welcome from the brothers - I think largely because they loved Rob so much last year - but I'm not complaining!... read more

We arrived at 2.00 after a long but interesting overnight journey on the Second Class Air-Conditioned Sleeper. Jaisalmer is everything I had ever dreamed of - a remote and exotic fortified town, described as a giant golden sand-castle in the middle of the Tar Desert. The town was full of exquisitely carved stone and woodwork, found on even the most basic of houses. We took literally hundreds of photos of the palace and famous Havelis or mansions . (Prepare to be bored rigid if you want to see my pics!) Our hotel was beautifully designed in the local style, with stone bedframes and shower bases, ornate alcoves and colourful silk drapes. The four brothers who own the place have built three similar hotels and plan eventually to have one each - all with stunning views of ... read more
