Taking the chance to do some travel on the way back from Perth we stopped for six days in Tokyo. To short a time to try and see much in a big city but we got a nice glimpse of the its culture. Not the culture shock we were expecting, but we have been to India recently. We stayed in the central bookshop district of Jimbocho in a basic but comfortable hotel. Each day we would explore a different area and discover what each had to offer. Early on we decided to visit one of the modern art galleries, but five minutes in we both agreed this isn't where we wanted to be. Although usually we love to spend time roaming around galleries, it didn't seem the right thing to do in Tokyo, as just walking ... read more

Spending a few days in London we'd hoped to see some of our favorite sites, but instead mostly took it easy catching up with our friends Russell and Sarah. It was nice to be somewhere familiar, but we were soon on the road again driving up through England to our new home city - Edinburgh. On the way up we saw a real spectrum of places including Bath at one end and Blackpool at the other! In Bath we were fascinated by the layers (quite literally) of history. From Roman ruins to the beautiful Victorian terraces. In the Bathhouses, the most popular attraction, you could walk through the once buried and still underground Roman baths that were only recently discovered under the most recent construction. Above, was the grand victorian Pumphouse restaurant where we shared coffee ... read more

Delhi was a change to the towns and small cities we'd been visiting the past few weeks, it seemed so big! Not quite sure where to start we did a bit of shopping, finding the glorious Anokhi store. Which specialises in real wood block printed textiles, that are all created in the traditional way. The company was founded to generate a new demand for work by Indian crafts people. Deciding that Delhi would be an easy place to visit again in the future we opted to spend most of our last week in a town called Chandigarh. Now Chandigarh really was different from the rest of the India we'd seen so far, mostly due to the town being designed and planned from scratch by Le Corbusier. It was one of the wealthiest and by far the ... read more

We had worried that we would encounter many difficulties here, but mostly for us it was no harder that anywhere else. Perhaps the fact we did it all very quickly and so meant that we were never a sitting target for trouble. Yes our hotel was terrible and rickshaw drivers were pests and it was hard to find decent food, but this was all pretty easy to ignore in the light of what was to see. To avoid the hassles that made Agra as famous as its main landmark, the Taj Mahal, we joined a government operated tour that rushed through the three significant sights all in one long day. Normally we'd do everything independently but at this stage we just wanted to get it done! The sights we saw were the Taj Mahal (of course), ... read more

India's famous pink city we found out has been that colour from when Prince Charlie visited in the 1960s. We had imagined it had been a decorative tradition that went back centuries and was not such a recent idea. It was a hectic city with some of the most freestyle driving anywhere. Not many vehicles were much bigger than an auto rickshaw, however we often used cycle rickshaws powered by me no less than double my age (J). It was a nice way to travel in the quieter areas and gave us the chance to have a good chat with the children who would ride along side us. In Jaipur there were also some fascinating sculpture things- I don't know what else you'd call them. Anyway, these rather large, and some massive, structures were used for ... read more

Another long bus trip later (they just go so damn slow) we made it into Jodhpur the birthplace of those sexy riding pants. The city was dominated by two massive landmarks - on one side the biggest fort/castle cities we've seen and on the other the much newer british designed hotel, now the palace of the Maharaja. Unseen until we visited the heights of the fort was one of the more famous views in India - the brilliant blue coloring of the city below. Originally a way of identifying the homes of the highest brahman caste, most people have now adopted the trademark of painting their houses. Also, claiming that the colour repels mosquitos! Exploring the fort and old palace inside took most of a day and later we returned for a very romantic outdoor meal ... read more

Leaving in the late evening from Udaipur we took one very long bus journey across Rajestan to Jaselmere only a short distance from the Pakistan border. We had several ordeals to get there - including a 4am bus change, what we believe was bogus tourist officer collecting a small 'entry tax', a circus of hotel touts where we were delivered and a hotel change after going to 'a bad place'. Eventually and completely exhausted we settled into a great room with a window out the side of the huge and ancient fort city walls. The place had sprung out of the dessert centuries earlier being the trade route with the west and has remained a stronghold to the present day. Now the city is the centre of much of India's military might, where you see the ... read more

Lovely lovely Udaipur. We decided to pick ourselves up a little after our disaster trip to Ahmedabad and treated ourselves to a stay in a 200 year old lakeside converted haveli - a residence of 'someone quite important' with a beautiful courtyard in its centre and views over to the Lake Palace. Ah sigh! The town was very tourist friendly and easy to get around on foot. The main bother came from persistent shop keepers trying to make some easy cash, but we were mostly uninterested as they sold much of the same stuff as each other. We used our stay to relax, get some reading in and enjoy the food and drink on offer. It was hard to think of going anywhere else when overlooking the lake with a beer and some indian snacks during ... read more

Leaving Melbourne and staying overnight in Sydney gave us a chance to go on a tour through the Opera House. It was a bit of a struggle for me (Jarrad), still feeling the full effects of a flu I was trying to shake in time for India. Kate had it previously and had mostly recovered. Starting early the following morning we boarded out flight to Mumbai or at least to Darwin where we got to spend an hour in their grand International Airport (a shed). Finally arriving in India in the evening I was particularly exhausted and sore in the head after a days flying. As with our past trip through Asia we realized that it would take a while Acclimatize and Culturize. This became very apparent when we took the long taxi ride through seemingly ... read more

La La land was a strange experience. Perhaps we were a little over traveling, or perhaps it is just a horrible place, but we're sure we didn't have much fun here. Staying in Hollywood right around the corner from the walk of fame, we were in the middle of what most people go for. Our guest house had was once home to many of Hollywoods screen godess' when it was accommodation for young women in the 20s and 30s. After finding all our favorite stars stars and putting our hands against Arnie's hand prints, the excitement of the area quickly wore off and we needed to venture further afield. Unfortunately LA doesn't make it easy to get around without a car. We felt like the public transport was only there for a certain class of people ... read more
