My goodness the fort here is unlike any other it is really lived in by the locals and full of guest houses and small hotels although the open sewers tell their own story!!!!!!!!I gather it is slowly being eroded by over population and destroyed by too many tourists which is one reason we stated outside of the fort. Last night we went on a trip with some fellow tourists in our hotel who were from belgium and france. We firstly were driven into the desert ina jeep a dusk and then wandered through a typical desert village.Katie and I felt very uncomfortable doing this as it all felt very artificial and the villages seemed to perform as characters on stage. We arrived at a remaote area and were faced woth a line of tick ridden camels! Yes we ... read more

Got a bit to catch up on... whoops! WE've been travelling for the last few days with a Irish/American couple, Gio and Cindy who have kept us giggling constantly when things on board camels got too much, back to that in a minute. We met them on the bus from Udaipur to Jodphur and, as always, it's the near death experiences that bring people together. We had 2 crashes; one when a lorry went into the back of us, (it was resolved by our driver getting out of the bus and lamping the driver of the lorry through his window) and later on we drove into a lorry that had stopped to avoid another crash! nothing too drastic but meant we made some new friends! Jodphur was wonderful. The huge fort rising up above the blue ... read more

Our relationship with Eshaq, the young hotel manager, began to deteriorate fairly rapidly once we came to discuss whether or not we would be going on a camel safari. He had persuaded us into his hotel with a cheap rickshaw ride and very cheap room prices but we knew (and we told him that we knew) that he was going all out to make his money from us on one of the desert trips that Jaisalmer is famous for. That was fine because we weren’t intending to go on such a trip and he assured us that there was no obligation! He sat down with us on the rooftop restaurant on the evening we arrived, feigning casual friendliness. He wasn’t going to be the one to bring up the camel safari topic that was so ... read more

Got more familiar with camels for a couple of days, they have the most bizarre mating call; they loll their tongue out of their mouth and bubble air through it like a wet balloon. Whatever works for them. ... read more

This blog entry is not an accounting of a day in the life of Marni in India...or perhaps it is. But this is more a day in the life of Marni's thoughts as I sit on buses, trains and planes across India. Recently I have begun to ponder this word "friend". It seems that when you travel on your own, this word takes on a new meaning. For instance, a person you meet on the bus as a fellow "foreigner" soon becomes a good enough friend to share a rickshaw ride, and maybe even a hotel with. This same friend is later mentioned in stories you share with other travelers a few weeks later as you account stories you have from cities they might be traveling to. They have become friends, as indelible from your memory ... read more

So, I am now pleased to report that it has officially been 2 days...and I am festival and parade free. That's right folks, I have not seen a band or a king or an elephant parading around it well over 48 hours. But, notice I did not say camel. The truth is that I have also not left Jaiselmer, a town hundreds of kilometers west of Dehli where I took that lovely train ride that arrived on Thursday. It is now Sunday. This is officially my favorite stop on my trip...and if it were not that I am flying out of Mumbai on Wednesday night...I might have just taken up temporary residency. To be quite frank, I am not sure why. Perhaps its the sandstone of the fort that is mildly reminiscent of Jerusalem. Perhaps it ... read more

I am now on DAY 3 of festivals. Yes, that is correct...I have now seen no fewer than three parades in 3 days. When last we left off...I was on a choose your own adventure, truly unsure as to where I would end up the next morning. Here is how the rest of the evening/morning played out. After arriving at the train station with a couple of Swedes frm my guest house, we found out that our train was 40 minutes late...not bad. One might even consider that early. Climbing up into my car...a sleeper car with air conditioning, I was greeted to the knowledge that my bed was the top bed in a compartment with 3 men. Now, if this were Amtrak on a DC-Boston trek, this would not be an issue. But let's go ... read more

After our long wait in the Johdpur train station we were finally ready to board the overnight train to Jaisalmer, a fortressed town in the middle of the Thar Desert not too far from the border with Pakistan. We settled quickly into the familiar routine of getting comfortable on the high bunk beds. Getting out of sleeping bags and ensuring that all our our luggage was safely stowed under our heads or beneath our beds so it could not disappear whilst we slept. These overnight train rides can be at worst an absolute nightmare so I was pleased to arrive in the very early hours of the morning in our destination having slept for some of the way. We were however still very tired, groggy and grumpy when we arrived and were very glad that the ... read more
