.....while i kiss the sky. Wow. That's about all i can say about the 16 day jaunt max and i just took around the annapurna circuit. It's more or less the ultimate hut trip. I would hardly call it roughing it. Yes, we wimped out and hired a porter/guide. Perhaps we did not go balls to the wall, but not having incredible loads i think brought a lot more enjoyment to the both of us. It was really nice to know that at the end of the day, we did not have to set up our shelter, cook our dinner, and crawl, dirty, into our sleeping bags. After a hard day of climbing, we could take a shower (of varying quality obviously) at most places, then sit down to some hot tea and wait while a ... read more
August 11 My days are full and fat with joy. There are little children that come by Agelos's every night. Just a few nights ago, Ana brought paints over and we did an exercise with the kids. SHe played music and told us to draw what we heard, and then paint with the music. There were about 10 of us, kids and adults and you should have seen the paintings that came from everyone. It was such a cool creative exercise. Ana's so good with people.......she is encouraging and she lifts everybody up. And she heals. Seriously. I saw it with my own eyes. Agelos was late to class yesterday because his phone had stopped working and the alarm was shot. When the three of us were back at his house, he was pushing buttons, throwing ... read more
I apologize for not keeping everyone updated about the wedding weekend, but there was shabbos and wedding hoorahs and other biznass with which to deal. So it turns out that the night before the wedding i was poisoned at a restaurant and spent the entire night blowing chunks and shitting water. I say i was poisoned because my friend rachel and i sat at the same table and Rachel was kinda giving the waitstaff a hard time because they were doing a shitty job. Anyway, the thing is all 14 of us ate at the restaurant, and rachel and i were the only ones to get food poisoning----neat. So i spent the day of the wedding curled in a ball in a dark room, trying to drink water and not throw it up, and somehow ... read more
Our budget for guatemala is waning, but i wanted to go ahead and write about the last few days before the details escape my mind.....although they're still so vividly with me now that it seems impossible that i could ever lose them. Since we're in Guatemala for such a short period of time, we kinda did a touristy loop of highlights, unfortunately missing atalan......though i saw postcards and the place looks amazing. One of the 'must sees' here is Tikal, and i am really really happy that we were able to experience it. It seems to have made up for all of our previous misfortune. Tikal is a unesco world heritage site of mayan ruins nestled deep in steamy jungle. After seeing Angkor Wat in Cambodia, i was wondering if these could even compare. They ... read more
Flores Central America Caribbean » Guatemala » Flores Tikal By lynz May 15th 2007 lyndsey We happened to pass through Flores several times. From what i gathered it's mostly an island specifically geared towards tourism, but we had fun there. There was a nice bar right on the water that we would frequent for sunsets, and often we'd go for an evening dip in the lake. (sort of gave me unwanted dreadlocks and itchy skin, but at the time it was pleasant.) I don't really have much else to say for it other than it was a jump off point....although we did have a nice rooftop gathering one night with people fro... read more
To maximize time we decided to suck it up and endure a 15 hour adventure that took us from Belize City across the border and then into Flores. At Flores we switched buses to an overnight bus that took us down to Guatamala city. I can´t say that it was a restful night of sleep, but we saved on accommodation for the night and got to where we needed to be. (The rough plan is to get south and work our way back up) They played a crappy Disney movie "The Princess Diaries" which i actually watched in its entirety. The only gem in the whole film came in a small piece of advice given from one character to another: "The brave may not live long, but the fearful don´t live at all." Little did ... read more
After a mere 24 hours, we decided to call it quits on Belize. It was pretty and all, but turns out not nearly as cheap as we were hoping. We took a water taxi to a small island called Caye Caulker which is supposedly the cheapest of all the islands surrounding belize, but after being there for just a short while we realized it was quite out of our budget. We spent 50 US on dinner and i think the beer may have been the straw that broke the camel´s back. They serve their beer in extra thick bottles that are actually smaller than normal beer bottles to begin with, so you get screwed. And lets be honest, we´ve had enough of that this trip. From what i gathered Belize has a huge diving scene ... read more
...california, real cool to the homeless. In the city, city of brentwood (those who aren't south park watchers won't get the reference, but that's cool. We've had a great couple of weeks exploring our own country for once. Took the long way to the ocean via southern oregon. Beautiful sweeping vistas and more trees than people. I liked it. Crescent City was a little lame but the redwoods there more than made up for that. It's good to be dwarfed and to be in the presence of something that has been living since the parthenon was erected. i said erect. heh heheheh. We stayed in our share of sleezy motels, one of which i'm convinced had a two way mirror for pervs. I put my forehead to the glass, didn't change clothes, and flipped them ... read more
I'm sitting on the rooftop of the hotel on the eve of my last full night in India. The sun is gradually sinking behind the Delhi haze and the jumble of her buildings. Hawks and flocks of birds are circling alone and in groups, creating a sort of pink concerto in the sky. The temperature in Delhi this time of year is cool......it feels like autumn. The wind, still a tint warm from the sun, is tossing colored flags around on a nearby rooftop and lapping seductively across my face. From the ledge i can look down and see the source of all the noise. The cars and people and cows maneuver through the narrow alley like blood cells through a vein. There is a buzz of activity all around me, but i am attempting ... read more
(This is written by Max) Well, after roughly a month of less than constant nagging, I’m finally making a contribution to the blog. I held off for a long time and then decided I wanted the last word…and I got it. How about that! We’ve got a matter of hours left on the sub-continent before our marathon length flight and I suppose now’s as good a time as any to share my thoughts with you, our faithful readers. Shouldn’t you have something better to do with your time? Living vicariously through us…you ought to be ashamed…we’re not even that fun. In a word, India is vivid. Vivid in the sense a certain rogue CIA agent in a Tom Robbins’ novel would use the word, though I don’t share his negative connotations. It’s an assault on the ... read more
