Rhi and I
the terrible twosome on the boat ride to paradise! im so sorry again for the late blog updates!! my dad keeps telling me to put more stuff up but its just finding the time so i apologise once more!
ok, now for some more stories...we took the opportunity of the easter bank holiday in ghana to take a trip along the east coast, somewhere that i hadnt explored yet. We took friday off from the orphanage and caught a tro to a place called Ada Foah...a little village at the bottom of ghana where the river volta meets the atlantic ocean. It took us about 2 and half hours to get there but surprisingly the journey wasnt too bad...managed to get a window seat so that was definately a bonus! when we eventually got to ada foah we were met by an employee from the place that we booked to stay that night, and he led us to the river when we boarded a boat with a couple of other people. As we sailed down the river we glimpsed mud huts hidden in the depths of the palm trees and saw the local people washing in the river. It was so peaceful and such a welcomed change from the
hustle and bustle of Accra! Our bed for the night turned out to be a reed hut on the most beautiful beach ive ever seen..a mini slice of paradise! White sands, palm trees and blue waters! we were staying on a spit...a stretch of sand that jutted out into the middle of the sea..so on one side you could look at the calm lake volta and a 90degree turn saw the crashing waves of the sea. We spent the night there and saw the sunset over the water which again was another beautiful memory.
Saturday morning began with a swim across the lake to the other side so i can now offically say that ive swam across the river mouth of Lake Volta! after our fruit salad on the beach front we managed to drag ourselves away from paradise and catch a boat back to the main land. We caught another tro back to Accra and from there another tro to a place called Akosombo in the eastern region of Ghana to the source of Lake Volta. The journey was not brilliant as i had to share a seat with the mate (the title given to the man who
collects the money on the tro tros)...very hot and sweaty fairly large black man! it took us about 3 hours to get there so it was dark by the time we arrived in Aksomobo. We found a hostel, had a shower and headed out for something to eat! i had the most english thing on the menu - i shouldnt i know! but i was feeling a little homesick this week after being ill the week before, a spagehetti bolagnaise cheered me up a lot!!
Sunday morning saw us catch a taxi to the ferry port at Lake Volta and we embarked on a full day cruise of the lake complete with a live band and free food..had several surreal moments whilst on the boat, one of which was when the band started playing 'lady in red' by chris de burgh! very strange to hear that whilst looking at the mountains surrounding the lake! Lunch consisted of freshly caught fish and rice (cant escape the stuff) and i had my first alcoholic drink of the trip! a much appreciated malibu and pineapple! Again i really enjoyed the peace and tranquility that the lake provided. We docked at 4.30pm and
the heavens opened!! we were planning on getting a taxi back to the tro tro station in order to get one home back to Accra but there were no taxis to be seen...fortunately for us there was a group of indian men who had hired a tro tro out to take them back to Osu, Accra and kindly offered us a free lift!! it was a bizarre experience to be travelling through the african countryside whilst listening to bollywood music and having a discussion about whether i would accept an arranged marriage with a bunch of indian tailors...we even stopped off for tea and jam sandwiches on the way - very english!!
And thats my weekend! a very exhausting one to say the least... a lot of travelling but well worth it! Not sure what i have planned for the next weekend but i have been told today that my visa expires in 5 days even though i applied and was granted a 3 month visa...its got something to do with the airport only have 60 day stamps or something so i either have to give my passport to the ghanian embassy for 3 weeks or i can head
up to Togo and renew the visa in a day.....so Togo looks set for this weekend!
Just want to say thank you to everybody who has been leaving me comments and private messages..it means a lot to me to know that people back home are interested in what im doing out here! and its lovely to hear what you guys are doing back home...having fun in the snow still??? 😊
well thats all for now! lots of african love to everyone! x
