Well this is it! my last blog entry....I leave Ghana this Friday evening and arrive back home 11.30am the following Saturday...i cannot wait!! get butterfies in my stomach when i think of seeing family and friends again. Although I have enjoyed my time in Africa immensely, 3 months is just the right amount of time to be away from home!! Not much has happened since my last blog. I spent my last weekend in Accra, taking time to chill with my friends and host family which was really enjoyable. I didnt really feel like squeezing another trip in and thought I would just like to spend the time i have left with the people ive met over here. Even went into the orphanage on Sunday to say hi to the children! trying to cram in as ... read more

im going to start again with a massive apology for not writing any more blogs for a while! Ive already had my lovely father pestering me about it on my weekly phonecalls home, but to be honest nothing major has happened since last time. I dont have lots of different stories to tell unlike those who are travelling all over the world..all my stories revolve around the children and I dont want to bore people by talking about them all the time!! but here it goes... my last entry was over 2 weeks ago (sorry again!!) and I claimed it was the best weekend so far and that still hasnt been beaten! Rhi, the girl I was with for 2 months left at the end of March and if im being perfectly honest I wasnt looking ... read more

im so sorry again for the late blog updates!! my dad keeps telling me to put more stuff up but its just finding the time so i apologise once more! ok, now for some more stories...we took the opportunity of the easter bank holiday in ghana to take a trip along the east coast, somewhere that i hadnt explored yet. We took friday off from the orphanage and caught a tro to a place called Ada Foah...a little village at the bottom of ghana where the river volta meets the atlantic ocean. It took us about 2 and half hours to get there but surprisingly the journey wasnt too bad...managed to get a window seat so that was definately a bonus! when we eventually got to ada foah we were met by an employee from the ... read more

Hello again...so sorry that Ive not updated my blog for a while been a very busy bee these past few weeks! so heres the next installment.. Ive been touring around Ghana for a couple of days last weekend with my organisation..it started at 5am Friday morning when we set off in our air conditioned van (thank goodness) to our first port of call..the town of Kumasi. In Kumasi we visited the King of the Ashanti region's palace which was interesting as we began to learn more about Ghanian culture. We were also informed that the present King was residing in the house next door! not bad hey! We discovered that there is a King and a Queen mother who rule the region...its a joint kingship and both rulers are often related, mother and son, most of ... read more

Hello again!! Managed to escape for the weekend to Cape Coast with 6 other volunteers. Its about 2 and a half hours away from Accra and the bus journey took us along the edge of the coast line. I saw a completely different side to Ghana in Cape Coast, sometimes the hustle and bustle of city life becomes a bit overwhelming and it was absolutely lovely to see something green!! We set off at 3pm Friday afternoon and arrived in Cape Coast at about 5.30ish. Immediately got into a taxi and headed off to the Oasis guest house which was situated right on the beach front...unfortunately they were full up!! so we ended up staying at Samo guest house which cost 9 cedi for a double room with a shower which was heaven for me!! seeing ... read more

Fortunately there are no other sad stories to tell this time ... an update on Abdoussalam though - he has been to the British Embassay and I think they are fixing him up with a Ghanian passport. I cant remember what I said about his mother and sisters but fortunately they are not dead but he cant find them in any of the refugee camps .. so he's still looking for them, he continues to smile and laugh though which is great!! There was a bit of drama on Saturday night...the girl I'm sharing a room with, Rhiannon, was taken to hospital on Sat night with suspected malaria. I went with her and spent the night on a garden chair next to her bed while she was placed on a drip. She is fine now but ... read more

When I first set up this travel blog I didnt think that I would have much to report everytime I managed to get to an internet cafe but I was completely wrong! Something interesting or something new happens everyday.....not enough time or patience (!) for me to write everything down but I'll try... When I arrived at the orphanage on Thursday there was a little boy sat under the tree playing with the younger children, several of the aunties had tried to talk to him in both Ga and Twi but they said he wasnt responding to them and that they thought he was French..Out of all the volunteers I was the only one who could speak a little of his language, so I sat down with him to try and understand why he was here ... read more

again, this is going to be a really short entry as time is running short on the computor! After this blog im going to try and write about things in a chronological order...much easier but for this one im just going to write down some of the highlights so far.... The Sunday after I arrived in Ghana, the 3rd, we visited a Church situated at the childrens home. Even before we had stepped into the room we could hear the singing as we drove down the road. I felt a little out of place being the only white person there as well as being the most shabbily dressed!! Ghanaian women always look well dressed with vibrant patterned dresses that i felt a bit like a scruff in linen trousers and a t-shirt! The whole service was ... read more

well, hi everyone!! sorry it has taken me so long to publish an entry on the travel blog...my first week here has been so busy that ive not had the chance to sit down and write about what ive been up too...guess there is only one way to start...from the beginning! I arrived late on friday 1st February about 10pm, the first thing to hit me was the heat..after leaving a very cold Manchester with a hooded top it was a big shock to find everyone wondering round in t-shirts and shorts. Had a mild panic after I landed as i couldn't find my project leader...crowd gathered outside the arrivals lounge was huge!! but then i saw a 'Ruth Jones' sign waving at me so the panic was over!! The first couple of days in Accra ... read more
