Our first experience with a Michelon Star Restaurant. I am now in a food coma. La Barbacane in Carcassonne, France. We were a little nervous about going to such a fancy place even in a tourist town, so we made a reservation for lunch at 1:30 pm instead of dinner. (Lunch is much cheaper) We arrived and they couldn't have been nicer or more welcoming. Waiters everywhere taking care of you. Everyone was eating outside on this beautiful sunny day in a gorgeous courtyard, so we joined them and the waiters arranged an umbrella for us to shield us from too much sun. Enjoy the photos.
Most of you know I am a terribly picky eater and this was going to be crazy, fancy food. I made a commitment that I would try the dishes as they were presented, even if it was stuff i wouldn't normally each, because i understand that the various flavors are supposed to compliment each other. I will save the food descriptions and our comments/adventures for the pictures, so if you are interested, view the pictures in this blog.
Overall, the experience was amazing and a ton of fun.The atmosphere outside was casual and relaxed,
Macaroons
After breakfast at the hotel we stopped for a mid-morning snack. So fresh and delicious People were wearing anything they wanted. We did the fixed price menu of 39 euro for 3 courses. This price included wine. The waiters were a little taken aback when we didn't want the wine. I think we were the only people in the restaurant not drinking wine. They ended up taking it off our bill! Instead I ordered their specially created appertiff. picture somewhere.
The town of Carcassonne has lots of touristy trash shops, but if you wander around, you find some very nice and unusual shops with classy and interesting merchandise. Dot and I both bought necklaces and a few gifts. One of the shops had beautiful leather jackets and coats. The clerk said they were made of lambskin. They were having a sale on certain items - 50% off. Very cute jacket I asked about. I am pretty sure she said that is was $900 after the 50% discount. We moved on. There was also a shop with purses, nicknacks, shoes, etc made entirely out of Cork. Very cute, but kind of weird. Waterproof.
We also discovered that Kevin Costner's Robinhood was filmed here. This was the town of Nottingham and the entire village was involved. They don't
advertise that, not sure why not, but you can totally see Robinhood running around the ramparts.
Everyone starts out speaking French to us now. I think we have lost our American look. What do you think Mary? Are we blending in? By the way, when we do attempt to speak French, Dot keeps saying Si for yes, instead of Oiu. She thinks we're Italian.
Much more story in the pics today. check them out
Thanks for reading everyone. Tomorrow is another travel day. We travel from Carcassonne to St Remy in Provence. Travel by car--eeck. Tonight we will go back to the walled city after dark. It is supposed to be beautifully lit at night. Think Dot will make it till dark?
