Today we travelled by car from Carcassonne to Saint Remy in Provence, France. We drove with our 3 GPSs giving us directions. Most of the drive was on toll highways so it was pretty easy. We again lunched at the gas stations, which have amazing food and lots of choices. The bread, as usual is amazing. I had to spend 3 euro for a soda at McDonalds, but at least it had ice in it. I have totally conquered the McDonalds kiosk and love using Apple Pay there.
We arrived in St Remy around 1 pm. Our little car is working out well. Easy to park and easy to drive. We explored town – lots of strange and unusual shops. One shop had everything made out of felt. Pillows, dresses, purses. Weird. Our hotel is clean and nice. We are staying here until Friday, so we have a small "apartment". A kitchen and 2 bedrooms – yay – I get my own bed and my own room. What a treat! However, the cell service in this hotel and the entire town is pitiful. The WIFI at the hotel is pitiful. I rented a hotspot and brought it, but it doesn't
work downstairs at all – the cell signal is better upstairs, but it is still only 3G. Not sure how much I will be online while we are here.
We had dinner at a Rick recommendation, Café de la Place. Of course we wanted to eat dinner around 6 pm when no one was serving food, but we asked and they agreed to serve us heathens even though no one else there was eating. They were all just drinking and smoking. Everyone was sitting outside because it was a beautiful day. Pictures are below if they load using this wifi. It was good, but now we are jaded and nothing can compare to our gourmet lunch from yesterday. They didn't have an English menu. The menu was on chalkboards. The poor waitress brought the chalkboard to our table and attempted to translate as best she could. You can see our safe choices in the pictures.
As we were leaving the restaurant this older drunk Frenchman sitting by himself stopped us and tried to talk to us. He spoke no English. We made a valiant attempt and were able to exchange a few phrases from my Coffee Break French lessons. Finally,
Looking out from our table
Great little place to people watch. At least 3 dogs in restaurant. French! we figured out he was asking about our election (today is an election day in France). We gave him our opinion of Trump and politely laughed our way out of there.
I have been having soft serve Gelato every day and it is really good here. Great creamy flavor. Sorry Dee.
Uneventful travel day. Tomorrow we were planning to explore nearby Pont du Gard, which has a huge Roman aquaduct and we believe some good hiking. But - big change of plans
We realized that the other really nice gourmet restaurant we wanted to go to was going to be closed for lunch on Wednesday and Thursday, so if we wanted to go for lunch, we had to go today. We also found out we couldn't make a reservation online, so we had to telephone them. Yow! We tried using the phone in the room thinking it would be easier. We tried dialing several differnet ways, but couldn't get it to work. Back to the cell phone. We looked up instructions, tried dialing several ways, consulted Rick and finally got through. First, a recording came on French, ugh. Then a guy answered speaking French of course. Parlez vous Anglais? Yes! Sort of.
Steak and Frites
I kept it simple today since they didn't have an English menu. They had a chalkboard and the poor waitress had to try to translate it. I was happy with my choice. Simple. J We made our reservation and I think he was as anxious to get off the phone as I was. Couldn't even understand me when I spelled Chris. Had to spell it twice. But, We have a reservation! http://www.luberon-hotel.fr/restaurant/nos-menus-2
Dot is downstairs in our living room re-planning our routes and re-programming our GPS(s). Big food day tomorrow. Mary Ash and Harley are going to turn us into foodies yet! Of course, we did have gas station sandwiches for lunch. Hmmmm.
Wish us luck tomorrow and happy food adventures.
