Question about traveling around conveniently in the Philippines.
Some friends and I are planing travels to the Philippines for one week at the end of July. Does anybody have any advice on the best way to find transportation to Boracay? I have heard about traveling by land and ferry, but how do you book it? And given that Boracay is our final destination, does it make more sense (economically and time-wise) to fly into Cebu instead of Manila??

Reply to this you can book your flight to either manila or cebu
check www.cebupacificair.com and choose boracay-caticlan (not kalibo since this is still far from boracay)
once in caticlan, ride a tricycle going the ferry station
in the ferry station, go buy your ticket towards boracay.. it's a 10 (or less) minutes ride
for hotels, go check out hey jude hotel... it is not beach front but it is situated in the middle, with a lot of stores

Reply to this Yup, I agree with ritchie ramos. Make sure your destination is Caticlan and not Kalibo. Best to book a place located at Station 2 where a lot of happenings/partyings are ongoing. Boracay is full nowadays since it's summer in Manila and we are experiencing a very hot climate. Just a warning, you might have a hard time booking a flight or a place to stay.
Anyways, enjoy our beaches!

Reply to this I am planing future travels to the Philippines. I have no schedule at this point. Plans are to be destined for Illagan City, Lanoa De Norte to meet a friend I have coresponded with for years. Does anybody have any advice on how to get there from airport, cheapest place to stay, dangers to expect, what length to plan my stay, what credentials to bring/get-ANY VERBAL HELP?. I have never traveled outside of U.S. and would appreciate financial advice as I am very frugal yet safety concious and I am hearing stories about this area. I would like to learn about resources that would be helpful as a tourist in case my friendly tourguide turns out to be "not so friendly". At least the trip will be a good experiance-Im hoping.

- it's a pretty safe place
- you'll go places with your money (dollar) since it has a huge value versus our pesos - one decent meal in mcdonalds can cost you about 2dollars only 😊
Reply to this I have been to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iligan_City before it is very informative about the surroundings, history etc. I am also aware of the huge economic diffrence (I have been coresponding with a friend there for years). I was not aware of the www.cebupacificair.com site until I read the blogs on msg#2 last night. It was a great site and made me wonder if It wouldn't be better to go into davao instead of cagayen de oro. There is a significant diffrence between them in price, but what about security etc. althouth I see flights into manila from seattle, I also see them into cebu.which would be better to fly into or is price the only issue here?

Reply to this the pension natividad is a great hostel in manila! its about 150 pesos from the airport if you find a normal cab. the airport has a taxi service and charges a 400 peso airport fee for your cab to take you to your destination. however, if you walk out of the airport and away from the hubbub you can try and find a regular cabby to take you to your hostel.
look into pension natividad - thy have a cheap dorm room (400 pesos in march 08) and they also have private rooms.
the staff is friendly, things are clean, they serve good food, and i met a few other travellers there. there is also an internet cafe 5 mins away. nice and safe!
i was in the philippines for a week as well and my week started off life yours. didn't make it to borocay though, kinda wish i did but opted for a bus to batangas and then off to a crazy adventure from there!... check out my blog for more if you want...!

Reply to this i was lucky to meet some great people, it could have turned out differently. i didn't feel very safe in manila and wouldn't recommend travelling alone there... but it was fun! glad you enjoyed.
i had no reservation for the hostel in manila, and it was during a holiday too, Holy Week. wouldn't hurt to try and reserve though. the dorm room only has about 16-20 beds per gender. good luck!
