Anyone been to Macau?

Deciding on one more day in Hong Kong or a Day and Night in Macau

Hi there

I have a bit of a dilemma, I have to fly from Macau to get to Bangkok (flight all booked). So I need to get the ferry from Hong Kong. The thing is I'm not sure whether I should get the ferry to Macau the day before my flight to see the sights and spend a night there (getting my flight in the morning) or spend an extra day and night in Hong Kong.

Is it worth having a day in Macau, is there plenty to do and see apart from the casinos?

Any advice would be great.

hey Chris

I did the Hong Kong to Macau to Singapore trip so we are a bit on the same track. Having been in China for several months prior to my arrival in Hong Kong I did not find Hong Kong overly exciting but all the same worth a stay if not the day then one night. Accomadation is expensive so we stayed at thw "Mansions" and people who know them are now having a good laugh ... Natan Street and the close by night market are interesting and at night the area glows. The ferry from the harbor is a nice ride to the modern part of the city and at night you can see the lazer show and fireworks but a nice treat at night on a good clear night is Victoria Park and the tram ride to the top of the mountain is worth it. You can catch a Jet Boat to Macau arrive in the morning and if your flight from Macau is late in the afternoon or evening then you have lots of time to get to the airport. I would venture to say by taxi the airport is 30 minutes away. If you want to be safe, stay the noght but it too can be a bit costly with very liitle budget accomadation and only one Hostel that I am aware of. The sight of the town can be done pretty much on foot and the Architecture and feel and look of the city is very interesting and refreshing. The ruins of St. Paul are a must, very amazing and free and will take you about an hour of your time. There is an amazing Park beside the Ruins and it is like the old fort of Macau with a great view of the city from the top. Lots if little temples if you aren't yet templed out. Food is good and just walking around in the old parts of town are real interesting and different. The Casino scene is ok but I was not into it. We stayed at the Holiday Inn which was the cheapest we could find at the time. E-mail me at peter_orourke@live.ca if you need more info. Reply to this

Thanks for this info, really interesting. Its refreshing as I posted on another forum the same question and someone told me not to bother with a day in Macau as there isnt anything to see but as you've said there seems to be plenty to do.

Thanks again. Reply to this

The ruins of St. Paul are famous. Google them for more info. To sum up Macau it is a bit of Europe in Asia. it is very Portuguise (sp) ... also Credit cards are widly accepted in Macau. Tiger Airlines operates out of Macau airport and if you do not as yet have a flight, they are a great airline. Reply to this

I'll look into the ruins, thanks. I have a flight with AirAsia booked so I'm ok for flights at the moment, cheers for the suggestion though! :-) Reply to this
