I am planning a journey that will start 14 may in Beijing...
Hello I am planning a journey that will start 14 may in Beijing. From there I will slowly go to Lhasa, Katmandu and will end in New Delhi. I have searched the internet to find out if it’s necessary to travel with a permit and I couldn’t find a straight answer, does anybody no if this is strictly necessary? A second question is: how to travel from Katmandu to New Delhi? By bus perhaps and is it possible to buy my visa at the border?
Reply to this When you buy a train ticket bound for Lhasa in Beijing, you will have to buy a permit as well. It's kind of a package gig. But, you do not need to do any package tours or hotels even though they may tell you otherwise. You can easily do the sights in lhasa on your own, and if you need a guide or car, plenty of places to get them there. A permit for lhasa is not "strictly" necessary these days (or so they say) but if you go anywhere else in the country you are suppose to have it. Unless you speak fluent chinese, you will prob have to book through an agency who will also get you the permit.
You can go to Kathmandu to delhi overland with bus or train. I would get your india permit before you leave. It is doable in Kathmandu, but a pain in the ass and you have to be up early to go tot he consulate. Are you going straight to delhi or stopping along the way? I am pretty sure there is a bus that goes from kathmandu to delhi. tourist offices in thamel (kathmandu) can hook you up with it. India had great trains and definitely use them....some are later than others, but that is just "india time." You can't get your visa at the border. You can get your nepal visa at the border. Bring a passport photo with you.
hope this helps!
Reply to this I planned to follow the same itinary to reach Katmandou before the end of may. Unfortunately, I may have to change my plan.
It's seems that no permit is issued at the moment. So, you'd better follow the news to see if travel in tibet is again permitted.
Reply to this Thanks for the reactions,
I now have arranged a visa for China, Nepal and India and I'm ready to go on the 13 of May. I read in the newspaper that the Chinese government will open Tibet on the first of May, so I hoop to travel with the train to Lhasa
If there is somebody else how has similar plans your welcome to contact me.
Reply to this Hello,
I'm currently in China and if Tibet is open again on May, 1, I will go. I's not clear yet if it's necessary to be part of a group or if it's possible to do it as an independent traveler as before.
