I am going on holiday and need some advice on places to go!

Hi Guys,
I live in Thailand right now and i am thinking of going to China early next year for around 3 weeks, i need some advice on where to go,
will be flying from bangkok so unsure which airport to fly to, i am not going for anything in particular although i would like to see the great wall.
I am interested in going seeing some of China and finding some cheap places to stay, is that possible over there? i mean are there like cheap guesthouses like we have in thaialnd or anything like that? I am researching at the minute but know very little and was hoping someone here might be able to educate me, living and working in Thailand dramatically reduces my budget obviously but i am realistic and do not think it will cost nothing.
But was hoping someone here might be able to tell me the sort of tourist lodges etc to go and where might suit me best, maybe also some advice on moving around a little.
many thanks for any help guys

Hi Robin,

I have friends from Australia in china. They have been working and living in china for years. Maybe they can understand more about your needs in travel.
If it is helpful, I can forward your email to them.

If you wanna visit the Great Wall, Beijing capital international airport will be your first choice. http://en.bcia.com.cn/

It will be best to visit there in fall, and do avoid August, since the Olympics, it wiil be crowded and expensive for travelling.
I can help you to post some AD about guesshouse online.

PS: I am a International student from China. I will travel around in my country for 10 days in next summer. If you can pay my travelling fee and the round trip ticket (China-USA) ,I would love to be your guide and interpreter. My sister own a traveling agence, she can give us some advise. Hi Robin,

I have visited China (for leisure) about 10 times during last few years. Last visit was in September. I plan to return again in the next few months, most likely around Chinese New Year (2008/02/07). While I cannot give you the good advices that the local residents can, I can share my experiences from a tourist perspective. I have stayed at hostels, budget and high-class hotels. A few of the hostels that I have stayed have websites.

If on a tight budget, I would advice not spending too much time in big cities, such as Beijing and Shanghai, because most things, including food and lodging, have become quite expensive. I am always amazed of the price differences on goods and foods when outside the big cities.

If you are adventurous, then its best to explore on your own and join a few one-day tours. Being part of a tour will often give you quick entrance to sites, but you will be tied to a strict schedule and you will most likely waste a lot of time at gift shops. If you are not adventurous, then it's best to arrange for a full package tour before arriving to China.

Most merchants cannot accept foreign credit cards, and I have yet to find an automated bank machine that will accept my credit cards or bank cards. (Perhaps this is just my poor luck.) Thus, make sure you have sufficient cash on hand. Exchange rates are better at the banks and hotels than at the airports. Some hotels offer higher rates than banks. Also, not all the banks can or will exchange money. I usually try to find a bank that is in a area frequented by tourists because I know I can exchange money there.

Because there are so many things to comment about China, more information is required on your travel plan, such as timeline and things that you like to see besides the Great Wall. Feel free to PM me.

Regardless, enjoy your visit to China. Reply to this
