A valid passport and a visa are required of all foreigners visiting Vietnam. With very few exceptions, there is no such thing as a "visa on arrival." Visas are issued by Vietnamese embassies and consulates.

from Vietnam online - and matches what I can remember from travelling there a few years ago.

Hong Kong Embassy: 15/F Great Smart Tower, 230 Wan Chai Road · Phone: 591-4510

Don't know how long the turnaround will be - but usually it's a few working days.

Hi Ali,

I am contacting you as I see you have loads of experience regarding visa. I will go travelling from December till June next year starting by Australia and finishing by South East Asia.
My concerns are regarding my visa when I will get to SEA: Indeed I have planned to arrive in Bangkok from India around the 13th of April: I cannot request visa now as they are only valid for 3 months once they are issued, and I doubt I'll be able to organise this while I could be in the middle of nowhere in India or Nepal.

- I have a French passport and I was wondering if it was ok to turn up in Bangkok without any visa but my flight back home is not before the 15th of June from Bangkok? as far as I know I am entitled to 30 days in the country with a tourist visa that I could get at the airport, but they might question my flight ticket? how could I go around that?

- I have planned to spend just a few days in Bangkok and then fly to Hanoi (one way)...will I be able to organise a visa for Vietnam from Bangkok without a return ticket?

- I have planned then from vietnam to go to Laos and Cambodia, by train, by sea etc...what should I do to be able to visit those countries regarding the visa?

- To finish I will be back in Bangkok where I will spend the end of my trip...would that be ok to go back there then after I'd have spent a few days 1 month earlier?

I hope I am not asking to much and that it is ok for you to help me.

Thanks in advance ;0)

Hi Jeremie: Visas and travelling around in South East Asia is generally very easy - it seems so complicated when searching the net though! Take a look at Project Visa - should confirm the answers to most of your questions.

Thailand is fine with this - lots of people turn up with a return flight back (I've arrived on a one way! but the airlines are more picky now) - and then make visa runs - or travel the region before returning to Thailand. Probably they won't even ask to see your ticket!

Keep in mind that Thailand has a limit of 90 days in any 180 day period of time spent in Thailand on tourist permit on arrivals - if you want to spend more time than that in Thailand you'll need a visa - a trip to the embassy and about $30 dollars.

Probably. You'll get a 28 day visa - allow 3-4 working days in Bangkok to get this and probably another $30.

Cambodia and Laos are easy to get visas for - on most borders you can get a visa on arrival (Cambodia 30 days, Laos 15 days) - double check that the border that you want to arrive on supports this. If you want 30 days in Laos - apply in advance at an embassy. This will cost you... you guessed it - about $30 😉

Yes - it will be absolutely fine! Reply to this
