Malaria Tablets and Vaccination costs.
16 years ago, September 7th 2007 No: 1 Msg: #19047
Having had the fright of my life last night, when I visited my surgery about what vaccinations I needed, and how much it will cost me,

As I am going to Thailand, laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, I was advised I would need the following;

Typhoid
Hep A & B
Diptheria
Polio
Yellow Fever
japanese Encephalitus (or spelt something like that)
Rabies.
Malaria Tablets

Does anyone know how much there Yellow fever, Rabies and Jap Enc ones cost as the nurse said about £150 to £200 in total ??

Also I was advised that malarone malaria tablets are best but are very expensive. How has everyone else got on with the others ?
I just want to be covered for every thing without it totally eating up my travel funds.

Hi Guys, I think you should get a second opinion.
You only need Yellow Fever if travelling to Africa beforehand, Japanese Encephalitus isnt really needed. And i was told by my doctor not to worry too much about the rabies.
With the malaria tablets, there is a better optioon, i forget the name of it but it supposedly is affected by the sun, but i was told that not badly.
Seriously though, get a 2nd opinion. Reply to this

Hey, I agree that you should get a second opinion. I'm going to those areas plus china and I need Hep A & B, tetnis and diphtheria. Rabies isn't really a vaccination, it just buys you time. Without it, if you get bitten you have 24 hours to get to a hospital but with it you have 72 hours. We were told it isn't as necessary as hep a & b and tetnis but because we're going to be trekking in the middle of nowhere we're going to get it just to be on the safe side! I'm not getting Japanese Encpelitis because was told by the doc that the side affects of the vaccinations outweigh the risk of getting it, and also it's real expensive - €200. I'm not sure what malaria tablets I have yet but I'll let you know when I get them. Reply to this

No, I just went to a travel clinic and got pretty much the same info. You should not need Yello Fever, that is more for South America. It seems like the rabies vaccination is pretty crucial, its crazy expensive but if you get bitten it kicks in pretty quick. Very risky to not get it. I got the japansese encephalitis as well. They are both crazy expensive, both 3 shot series, about 200$ (US) each. It totally blew my budget! As far as the malaria medication, I am taking malarone, as the cheaper one (starts with a D) has side affects that include skin rashes and sensitivity to the sun. To save a little money, I'm not going to be taking malaria pills the entire time I'm in asia-they are only nessecary to take if there is an actual outbreak at the time-and any tourist agency should be able to tell you that-hope that helps! Get professional up to date medical advice specific for the areas you are travelling to. masta is one option. Your local pharmacist should be able to give you some advice and some anti-malarials are available over the counter without a prescription.
The advice changes periodically due to drug resistance. Don't skimp! It could make the difference between enjoying your trip or ending up in some dodgy hospital waiting to be medi-vac'd home.
With regards to doxycycline, it increases the skins sensitivity to sunlight, meaning you will burn more easily. Just take the usual precautions - heaps of sunscreen, cover up and avoid the midday sun. You should be fine. Reply to this
