We have just booked tours through Nepal and India and found some cheap flights that go from Melbourne - Kathmandu and then Kathmandu-Delhi-London. When booking our tours, our travel agent said that we would need to book tickets in India with an Indian credit card to do the trip from Delhi to London. But I'm sure that if we book our tickets as multistop now, then we won't run into this problem.
Basically I'm just finding out if anyone out there has had any problems, it seems a bit strange to us that we need to book tickets through a travel agent to get from Delhi to London.
Reply to this I went from Delhi to London in March and I had no problems. I bought my tickets online months in advance and flew with Air India (not the most comfortable, but certainly the cheapest.) I'm not sure what this travel agent was talking about, but we had no problems at all with pre purchased tickets.
Reply to this I have been travelling to India, in and out of Delhi since 1990 with tickets I purchased in Canada. I have done the Delhi Kathmandu Delhi route but must admit I purchased those tickets from an Indian travel agent. I don't think it was necessary, it was just a better deal for us at the time.
The agent/tour company also did our tour so we purchased the whole thing together. It was cheaper then doing the flight segment as part of my international flight. I have heard that if you are planning to purchase train passage while in India you need to do so at least two days before your journey... If I were doing what you are planning I would go on line to the airline that you are dealing with for your Melbourne-Kathmandu ticket and ask about the Delhi London portion. Someplace there is a misunderstanding. Most regularly scheduled airlines fly in and out of Delhi and the biggest hub in Europe is London.
Reply to this Thanks for the advice, we thought there wouldn't be a problem. We have found much cheaper flights online so we would prefer to book that way rather than through a travel agent. It seemed crazy that we couldn't book tickets ourselves, thousands of people travelling in and out of India would do it on their own every year.
An interesting thing we found with the website is that if we tried to book delhi to london as a seperate flight. it wouldn't work, but when we added it as part of a multi stop ticket, there were no problems.
