Looking to travel to Thailand and see some unique sites of the beaten path.
16 years ago, June 19th 2007 No: 1 Msg: #15414
Hello everyone,

I am currently planning my first trip to Thailand. I am not really interested in going to touristy locations, I want to have an authentic Thai experience. Therefore I was wondering if anyone could recommend any destinations that are off the beaten path? I am a little bit older (65), so extreme travel is off limits, but I am young at heart and open to adventure so if anyone has any suggestions I would be happy to hear them.

Thank-you for that suggestion. I hadn't considered a tour, and it may be something I'm interested in. Reply to this

Hi there,

You may go to Ayuthaya from Bangkok. Ayuthaya is a historical park not packing with tourists. It is about 1 hour by train and there are days tours from BKK.

Hi,

Ayutthaya is always crowded by Japanese, chinese or western tourists so definitely this place is not something that Mark is interested. i would suggest Korat which is northeast of bangkok and takes 2 & half hours drive from Bangkok, you can take train which will take 4 hours or can take tourist coach which will take 3 hours.Korat is less visited by tourists and you can cover the area within 2 days or even more. Another place which I will suggest is Thong Pha Phum which is in kanchanaburi but quite far away from the town, the place is less visited by tourists and it is close to Burma border , you can even walk into the border to see the local villagers.

Above all in Thailand you cannot avoid touristy locations because the country is tourism based and complete part of Thailand offers different type of activities.

i'd rather suggest 2 of them

1. Ranong - it's located in the south of thailand closed to Chumporn Province. There, u will find not too many tourists because Ranong is small and a pass-by to another province in deep south. u will find a hot spring water with no sulfur (1 of the 3 hot springs in Asia). Ranong has many tourist attractions that suits your styles ie. a historical place during World War 2, a better health in the Hot Spring Water, a good place for trekking, and a better location to picnic. see more info at http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Bay/8911/

2. Samutsongkram - it's located in the middle of thailand - 1 hour from Bangkok and also a pass-by to all provinces in south of thailand. There, u will find a floating market with many thai foods and you will enjoy the fireflies at night. Here, there're a lot of people coming to spend money eating variety of foods and there are also many temples with Unseen in Thailand. see more info. at http://www.circleofasia.com/guide/index.asp?Id=187

i hope this will help u in decision making. Have a nice trip 😊 Reply to this

Thank-you all for those great suggestions they have been really helpful. On another note I don't mind slightly touristy areas just as long as they maintain a certain degree of authenticity. There is nothing worse than going somewhere and all there is is souvenir stand after souvenir stand. Reply to this

Thailand has so much to offer and has many interesting places to visit.

http://www.lonelyplanet.com/worldguide/destinations/asia/thailand/
The following is quoted from the Lonely Planet:

"The peak seasons are August, November, December, February and March, with secondary peak months in January and July.
If your main objective is to avoid crowds and to take advantage of discounted rooms and low-season rates, you should consider
travelling during the least crowded months (April, May, June, September and October). On the other hand it's not difficult to
leave the crowds behind, even during peak months, if you simply avoid some of the most popular destinations (eg, Chiang Mai
and all islands and beaches). This is also the prime time for diving in terms of visibility and accessibility."

This guide will give you an idea of the different regions. As quoted from the same site, the north-east is generally not touristy.
www.travelfish.org

"Often ignored by the travellers to Thailand, the northeast region of Thailand, also known as I-san,
is a wildly colourful and interesting region which is well worth allowing some time to explore."

(Travelfish.org also offers sample itineraries worth considering).

Although I have only been to Thailand a few times and the longest I have stayed is 7 weeks, I would consider the places in the following itineraries not touristy:

http://adventures.worldnomads.com/destination/211/itinerary/38.aspx
http://adventures.worldnomads.com/destination/211/itinerary/37.aspx
http://adventures.worldnomads.com/destination/211/itinerary/35.aspx

The following itinerary consists of non-touristy places, except for Chiang Mai.
However, we find Chiang Mai not overwhelming. We love the Sunday market (not the evening market).
http://adventures.worldnomads.com/destination/211/itinerary/34.aspx

We visited Sukothai in December 2005, and found very few tourists.

My suggestion is to go to one place and leave immediately if you find it too touristy.

Also, try homestays:

Recommend 2 places:
First place is Hua Hin. This is where the King currently stays in this town. It is a beach town. Small Town filled with peace and calm environment with temperature around 75-90 degree F. More likely, you will spend time relaxing yourself, enjoy the beach watch, seafood, and local fruit. There is also a famous Health Destination called "Chiva Som Hua Hin " offered many types of health and stress reduction programs. It is about 2hrs ride from Bangkok. No commercial flight offers only charter flight.

Second place is Chaingmai located at the northern part of Thailand. The interesting things about this town is floral and local cultural. The weather is around 75-85 degree F. Also recomend "Homestay" as pggo Reply to this
