going RTW without flight tickets....

Hi guys and gals...

Recently I decided to pack my bags and start RTW trip - it will probably start in autumn, and should take from 1 to 2 years... I plan to start in Europe and head towards Australia. And then South America and then preferably Africa. Should probably stop in some places to volunteer. Basically, don\'t know when and whether i will return back home.

So, my question is... i don\'t want to buy any plane tickets infront. Will I have problems obtaining flights for example from Australia to South America? Will there be problems with obtaining visas, as I won\'t have any onward flight ticket...?

Any help would be appreciated. Reply to this

Hi

It's difficult to give definitive answers to all your questions. I left the UK 3 years ago without buying any flights in advance. There are some places where you need to have an onward flight ticket, sometimes this isn't a problem for instance in SE Asia there are many no-frills airlines. So, for instance when I flew into the Philippines I needed an onward ticket. But seeing as it only cost 30 pounds (60 US dollars) to fly to the Philipines from KL (Malaysia) buying an onward ticket wasn't a huge hole in my budget! The market in budget airlines is also growing and expanding all the time. The only long haul budget airline at the moment is Oasis which flies from Hong Kong to the UK. Air Asia have promised that they will introduce some very cheap long haul flights soon - the brand will I think be called Air Asia X. They promise to introduce flights from KL (Malaysia) to London for 500 Ringets return (80 Pounds UK or 150 US dollars) some time next year. You may find that you need to make several connecting flights to get from Aus to South America . For instance there are many 'no frills' operators that fly between Aus and SE Asia. So, if Air Asia has introduced their flight to London, you could then connect to Africa or South America. The cheapest flights to Africa tend to run from London or Paris. Basically the cheapest flights to the ex-French colonies run from France and the cheapest flights to the ex- British colonies run from Britain!

My best advice is to google like mad!

Recently leaving Brisbane on a oneway Virgin Blue flight to Christchurch - I was asked to show my ticket for leaving NZ ...I had to unpack my case to get it- and was told I would need it at immigrtaion in New Zealand - and yes they asked for it. So there may be some problems if you dont have onward tickets. Reply to this

What if you enter a country by land? Do you need a flight out or a train/bus ticket? Reply to this
