How do you determine whether a blog is a popular blog in a month

Under 'Blogs' in the toolbar in the Homepage, there is a banner "Most popular Blogs this month". What is the popularity index, and how it is determined?

There are many blogs under the banner "Most popular blogs this month", old and new. Some are with 100+ views, some are with 20+ views. My last blog, "A multicultural mosaic in hotel Bijagua" published on April 23, 2016 with 300+ views is not listed there, so as my first blog on Sapa with 154 views is not listed there. So, my question is how it is determined whether a blog is popular or unpopular? what are the criteria?

In my judgment, there are two parameters here to consider, - a) the number of views and b) the number of comments. Although a) could be debated suggesting that a number of views does not necessarily mean everyone read it full. However, if one has many viewers combined with many comments,- it is a good index of popularity.

Personally, I keep track of blogs in an excel spreadsheet. At the end of the day, I check views and comments and log it. Once a month I run excel engine and other tools to check the trend. From there I identify which blogs did not do well and why. Accordingly, I try to identify the gaps and try to improve my writing. To me, writing is a serious business and readers are the ultimate judge and jury! But that's me. I would like to know how travelorg determines the popularity index.

Your explanation would be greatly appreciated. Reply to this

Hi Tab,

I believe I answered your question in the support email you sent, but your blog does appear on the popular blogs page. For you and anybody else that may be wondering, the popular blog status applies only in the month that the blog was published and for the number of visits within that month.

Thanks!

Tab,
We enjoy your blogs and are not surprised to hear you've been featured on the popular blogs page.
How do you think your writing has changed over time? What kinds of gaps have you identified?

In response to: Msg #196459 Hello Merry,

Hi Merry,
Thank you for your response. And, thank you for the accolade...means a lot to me!
You must be thinking, 'this Tab guy is a crazy one...running the trending analysis of his blogs'...but Merry, believe me, it doesn't take me long to do, but it helps me in identifying the gaps.
To answer your question what gap I found in course of time, let me explain a bit.
I write to the travel column of a newspaper. So, when I started the blog writing in January, although the two forums are much different, I imported some of my styles and experimented with them. And it clicked. For example, whenever possible I try to add some dialogues in my blog so that it is not very dry and makes it easy reading. I have noticed similar style in 'Anastasia78.' That helps. But the largest gap that I have identified so far is that I found people are more interested in reading common peoples' story that is blended in a journey - their joys and sorrows, love and affection, the 'human bondage'. I suppose, that is the human psychology. From that perspective, I have tried to add here another dimension, - some of my blogs have become essentially 'travalogue' rather than 'travel blog'.
I found, people are least interested in adventure type blogs, e.g. ziplining, skydiving, microlite etc. etc. A quick example, my latest blog is about ziplining in Arenal. In a day, I found 'the rate of change in the number of views' is slower than my previous blog 'a multicultural mosaic...". So, it is not the total number of views only, but also the rate of change of views over time. In technical term, we call it 'dx/dt' - change over time. Faster it is, more appealing the blog is. It is the tell-tale sign of appreciation index in my opinion. To make it more appealing, the front collage has become my trademark. The name of a blog also carries some weight I found. One more thing Dave (Dancing Dave) has suggested me, is to include any video clips that I may have inside the blog. I have started that; well, I found that it has some appeal, but not a whole lot. One may ask the question, then why do I write those adventure type blogs? The answer is simple,- I love them as much as I love my other blogs. Besides, there is a cross section of viewers, although smaller in number, those serve their needs.
Sorry, my answer has become too long. I must stop now. But thanks again Merry Jo...I hope I have answered to your queries. Feel free to ask me more. Let's stay in touch.

Regards,

Tab

Tab,
Thank you for your response. We agree that Anastasia78 has an excellent writing style and Dancing Dave is terrific. He's a good friend and we have traveled with him and his lovely wife Denise. In my opinion two bloggers you may want to start following are bvchef and cabochick. In my opinion their blogs are full of humor and human interest stories. There are so many great bloggers on Travel Blog.

No I don't think you are crazy! Keep writing and blogging.

Happy Travels Merry
