info on travelling to india for the first time
17 years ago, February 28th 2007 No: 1 Msg: #11238
I am going to India for the first time. Any info on what to see, where to stay, and where to do yoga are appreciated!

Also, if you did any kind of tour, I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Mysore is a huge yoga centre.

I will admit from what I've observed, you can do yoga in a traditional way which is a lot different than what I would have expected vs. north-American catered yoga. I travelled with a man who essentially had a PhD in yoga and he had lived in an ashram all of his life sleeping on a bare floor, eating and sleeping alone (male and female divided), rising at 5am to meditate, etc. I know to study with some masters, you need a recommendation that you're serious enough for it.

As for the rest of your questions, to better answer it you might want to be more specific.
How long are you going for
Whats your budget
How do you want to get around - plane, train, local bus?
what interests do you have: cultural, natural scenic, activity oriented, etc.
as for where to stay: India has every type of accomodation depending on your price range.
as for tour, do you want the whirlwind tour or local-based day tour.

You might want to consider getting a Lonely Planet or Rough guide book to India.

if you have more questions, feel free to PM me. I get lazy and don't really check back on threads I post on often. If you're thinking of doing a tour because you're travelling alone, I can definitely give you the pros and cons. Reply to this
