1. You should book package tour for more savings. Almost hotels in Hanoi offer package deal at good rate and inclusive of everything like: return airport transfer, meals, package tour (city tour, Halong Bay or Sapa tour...) all are in one at competitive rate. Please contact the hotel directly for booking. Do not book each service separately as you will have to pay much more than you book a package.
2. Stay in hotels in Hanoi old quarter:
You should stay in a hotel in the old quarter as the location is right in Hanoi center and convenient to explore the beautiful sights of the city, go shopping, enjoy Hanoi specialties.. All you can find in the old quarter.
3. Destinations should not be missed if you are in Hanoi: Hoan Kiem Lake, Hochiminh Complex, Temple of Literature, the Vietnam museum of Ethnology, Tran Quoc Pagoda...
4. Activities in Hanoi: Watching water puppet show, cyclo tour around the old quarter, shopping...
5. Specialty should be tried one time: "Pho", " Cha ca La Vong", "Bun thang", " Bun cha"
6. Bargain before buying something: Please remember to bargain before buying something as sellers in Hanoi often mark ups the rate up to over 30%! (MISSING)
7. One of the best hotels in Hanoi, next to Hoan Kiem Lake is Hanoi Imperial Hotel (44 Hang Hanh Str, Hoan Kiem Dist, Hanoi) <snip> You can find here the best package rate and hospital services.

I have to disagree here (although I'm sure people reading this can see that the oP is a hotel so very bias). There is absolutely no need to book a package deal to Vietnam. You can do it yourself easily. Hotels are easy to book online or you can just turn up and find a room in most places. It doesn't cost more and you have freedom to chose tours and restaurants yourself. A lot of Vietnamese people generally like package deals, so they feel it's the best way to see their country. I'm sure independent travellers like those on this site can make their own decisions.
I'm letting this post stay on the forum because the advice on food and places to visit is good, but please remember tour operators and hotels are not allowed to advertise their services on here. Reply to this

If you fo to Viet Nam here is some advises for you:
- Places: Hue: Occupying a large, bounded area on the north side of Perfume River; four citadels were comprised to create the Capital City: Hoang Thanh (Imperial City) for royal palaces and shrines, Tu Cam Thanh (Forbidden Purple City) for royal residences, Dai Noi (Inner city) and Tran Binh Dai, which exclusively ancient architecture. Tourists are expected to spend at least one day to visit the whole complex. They can also catch a taxi, hire a bicycle, rent a “xich lo”- Vietnamese cycle if do not feel like walking around the site.Phong Nha- Quang Binh:This gigantic cave is very close to Hang Son Doong, and featured in the same National Geographic photographic spread in 2011. Getting here involves a trek through dense jungle, valleys and the Ban Doong minority village, a very remote tribal settlement (with no electricity or roads). You stay overnight in the cave or minority village.
- Visa: can get at vietnamsvisa*com-Foods: pho: What list of Vietnamese cuisine would be complete without pho? It’s almost impossible to walk a block in Vietnam’s major cities without bumping into a crowd of hungry patrons slurping noodles at a makeshift pho stand. This simple staple consisting of a salty broth, fresh rice noodles, a sprinkling of herbs and chicken or beef, features predominately in the local diet -- and understandably so. It’s cheap, tasty, and widely available at all hours.egg coffee: Vietnamese “egg coffee” is technically a drink but we prefer to put it in the dessert category. The creamy soft, meringue-like egg white foam perched on the dense Vietnamese coffee will have even those who don’t normally crave a cup of joe licking their spoons with delight.
In Hanoi, follow the tiny alley between the kitschy souvenir shops at 11 Hang Gai into the clearing, and up several flights of increasingly dicey stairs to pair your ca phe trung with an unbeatable view of Hoan Kiem Lake. Reply to this

Hi, Vietnam's recent history offers a great amount of interest and its stunning natural beauty is truly breath-taking. It still evokes very recent memories and its labyrinth of adventure together with this mystique is a country which attracts visitors from all over the world. It is this, together with the vibrancy of the cities and incredible beaches which makes Vietnam a unique destination to experience. In Hanoi, you can explore Van Long which is nicknamed “a bay without waves" due to the fact that its water is as calm as a large mirror that has a dazzling reflection of the surrounding mountains and clouds.

Take a river boat cruise and have picturesque view of landscapes, cliffs and lime stones of Trang An and Bai Dinh Temples. Cycling in Nha Trang will infuse your nomadic essence within the entire trip where you’ll get an opportunity to go beyond limits, exploring and experiencing the true flavours of a destination. Or get acquainted with farmers or locals of the Mai Chau community and witness their local living of farming and animal breeding. Whatever your choice is, Hanoi is a wonderful city with contrasting attractions of food and culture with a traditional way of living. Have fun!

Hi,
In my opinion, I agree that you should book in advance a tour package with a local agent. It saves more and less be tired. It's sure that independent traveler is very free. Traveling with a guide book in hand will make you free in your discover but the problem is your holiday time is short and you have to take time to book hotel, to find all information and make lost your energy, not cover to the full hotel room as the booking deadline is too short.
It depend on you but I think it's better that you travel in Vietnam with a local agent. Reply to this
