I am travelling to India in November, December this year and would like to know roughly how much it costs to travel for a 2 month period during this time. I am a backpacker so budget accommodation preferred. Are youth hostels recommended?

Any advice would be great

We travelled India Aug-Dec 2006 and found that for two of us, we spent about $35 a day including sightseeing. I think an individual could do it on $20-30 a day depending on how low you can go! Knowing how to bargin is the ticket, you can never accept their first price. Budget accomidation varies a fair bit city to city. You'd be looking at 200-400 rupees. Some 200R places were clean and nice and others were dives where you definatly need your own sleeping bag and pillow case. For transportation, we found that sleeper class trains were awsome and night trains can save a hotel bill.

We loved India, have fun!

Thanks Carrol. I had a look at your photos, it looks beautiful. We are still trying to decide on India or South America...I am swaying towards India for the food! Did you book accommodation in advance or just organise it when you arrived?

Thanks for your help.

We only booked accomodation for when we first arrived off the plane because we were getting in late at night. Other than that we never did and never needed to. There is always a room somewhere! Reply to this
