Dhaka, the Capital of Bangladesh, has a colorful history and rich cultural traditions. It was known as ‘Dacca’ till 1982 & then the spelling was changed to ‘Dhaka’. Today’s Dhaka has a long story of evolution.

It was founded during the 10th century. It served as the Mughal capital of Bengal from 1608 to 1704. Before coming under British rule in 1765 it was a trading center for British, French, and Dutch colonialism. The capital was shifted from Dhaka several tomes during this period. In 1905 it was again named the capital of Bengal, and in 1956 it became the capital of East Pakistan. During the Bangladesh war of independence in 1971 the city suffered heavy damages. Now it is the center of every business, trade & all sorts of administrative works in Bangladesh. It is known as the city of mosques and also the city of rickshaws. The Muslim influence is reflected in the more than 700 mosques and historic buildings found throughout the city.

The city is intersected by the rivers Buriganga. Dhaka District has an area of 1,463.60 square kilometres (565 sq mi) with a population of 18,305,671 in 2012; and is bounded by the districts of Gazipur, Tangail, Munshiganj, Rajbari, Narayanganj, Manikgan.

Its fame attracted travelers from far and near throughout the ages. The city is modernizing its transport and communications, and has been attracting large volumes of foreign investment in recent years. Dhaka has also emerged as one of the fastest growing cities in the world.

Dhaka is located in the geographic center of the country. It is in the great region of the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers. Dhaka experiences a hot, wet and humid tropical climate. Under the Köppen climate classification, Dhaka has a tropical savanna climate. The city has a distinct monsoonal season, with an annual average temperature of 25 deg C (77 deg F) and monthly means varying between 18 deg C (64 deg F) in January and 29 deg C (84 deg F) in August. Approximately 87% of the annual average rainfall of 2,123 millimeters (83.5 in) occurs between May and October.

Dhaka is located in one of the world’s leading rice- and jute-growing regions. Its industries include textiles (jute, muslin, cotton) and food processing, especially rice milling.
