Do people let their ethical and/or political values influence their travel choices?

I agree with all the reasons why we shouldn't give money to child beggars - it's very hard when you find yourself faced with big pleading eyes

Yes, that was my dilemma that night on the platform, as I have never given to anyone before (or since) - even children - so resolved it in my mind by buying food.

As for the person throwing money to children in the street in Cambodia for entertainment - not sure what term to it - but contemptible and patronising comes to mind. Reply to this

It is hard at times to walk away. We gave a sandwich to a small boy and girl in Cambodia and they quickly ate it. We were glad we did it.

In Peru we gave a woman some change and saw her 5 minutes later coming out of the market with a bag of oranges.

Sometimes you have to trust your judgement.
