Bank card VS Travelers checks... which is best???
im going to Asia next year (Honk Kong, China, Tokyo, Thailand) and i have read in the guide books that most places such as shops dont accept Credit Cards, and lots of
cash machines dont accept foreign Bank cards!! what i want to know is this.... is it better to split my money and take some in travelers checks and rest on my bank card so i can pull money when i need it OR take it all in secure travelers checks and get them changed as needed???
any info would be great guys!!!
Reply to this Forget traveler's check. Nobody takes them anymore. I was at the KK Hyatt and they explicitly state that they don't take traveler's checks - the reason - there's too many fakes and it's easy to fake. If you cash it in a bank, there's a huge service charge.
Take your credit card - call your credit card company and tell them your travel dates and what countries you will be. Then ask them for a PIN number so you can withdraw money from any ATM's. If you don't already have it, ask them to send you a credit card with the "wave" - ie proximity type where they wave over their machine and not use magnetic stripe - many places only take those. But they certainly have no problems with foreign credit cards otherwise.
I just came back from Malaysia and HK - used my credit card whenever they accept it. When to ATM to withdraw cash in local currency.
