Me and two of my tribe are going to India for 6 weeks at the beginning of november, Boys on the road! It'll be a first for both of them but i was there for 3 months in the winter of '10 - '11 and always vowed to go back. Its not a case of 'if', its a case of 'when'!

Things took a turn for the horrific for me a couple of months ago which pushed me to get this next trip planned and some of my boys wanted to join me so i drew up a brief Northern Itinerary, it goes a little something like this:

Delhi - Mcleod Ganj - Manali - Shimla - Rishikesh - Agra - Varanasi - Bodhgaya - Dhanbad - Puri - Delhi.

Now i have a couple of questions... On that route, which i think is more or less one after the other, are there any places nearby that are of interest? I know Dhanbad is the 'Coal Capital of India' but im not too into industrial area's is there anything nearby thats a little less... coaly? Which areas on the route are 'Dry'? Is there a train from Puri back to Delhi direct?

ive been looking at making a Southern Itinerary as well so we have a little choice but i never made it to the south last time(most of the stops on the northern 1 i never went to either apart from Delhi, Mcleod Ganj and Shimla)... The Southern Itinerary would have to include the kerala backwaters, hampi and kanyakumari but apart from that i dont know much about it...

Has anyone got any examples of a good 6 week itinerary north or south? wheres good to go down south? is anyone planning a trip to India at the beginning of november? maybe we could meet up...

One last question... What would be a good budget, each? 1,000ir a day? 1,500? more?

Any feedback would be immense. 😊

You may want to look at some group travel companies just to get an idea of places they may travel that you haven't been to or heard of. My husband and I went with Intrepid Travel in Northern India for 3 weeks in January 2012. I am not suggesting you use a travel company but you could get some city names, basic routes or activities to do from their websites.

Depending on your level of travel I would think 1,000 to 1,500 per day would be more than enough. Drinking is where you can spend the most as beer and alcohol isn't all that cheap in India. 150 rupees on up for a Kingfisher beer at most restaurants. Reply to this

Hi Alan
South India is indeed beautiful and much more chilled out than the North (altough it has as well a lot to offer). Just back from Kerala and managed to finish my first blog about Munar (inland hilly area with tea plantation), feel free to check out and let me know if you need more info.
The back waters is a fantastic experience and if on budget, the "ferry" boat is a very good option (you get to go from Allapeza to 6 hours further South) for 200 rupees per person. Accomodation wise, plenty of options from affordable guest house (750 rupees per night) to more luxury ones which can offer some attractive packages.

Hi,
<snip>
I love to travel myself and do a lot of road trips atleast 2-3 times a year. So can give you feedback on that.

<snip> There are a few missing links in your North trip as listed above and would advise you to skip Dhanbad. I think you should also drop Puri and just do a nice road trip up north - shimla - manali is in himachal while for rishikesh u will need to go to Uttaranchal...

Its best if you plan your point-to-point connections well else you will be on the road for most of your trip.
