While reading up on Thailand as I would like to make that my next destination, I have read that Thai people find it disrespectful for tourist to wear short short, tank tops, bikini and men to be topless. But when I look at all the pictures in blogs it seems everyone is wear just that. Is this information from years ago or do many people not know this about proper clothing to wear when in Thailand? I just returned from 10 days in Thailand, and noticed something about the attire in both Bangkok and Kanchanaburi. I saw plenty of Thai women wearing shorts (just above or below the knees), but none of them wore tank tops or bikinis - they always covered the top part of their bodies. A shirt was the standard item of clothing.

Not sure what the convention is in the beach and resort areas (I have not visited them) but in Bangkok I would certainly avoid exposing the upper body by wearing something that at least covers the shoulders. Reply to this

I've been to phuket, bangkok, pattaya and krabi over the years and have worn singlet tops and shorts half way up my thighs with no issues. My hubby is not a singlet wearing type of guy but you could definitly wear those around the streets and in the bars. For restarants in hotels you would want to dress up a bit nicer but same as australia really.... Reply to this

As has been said, in formal situations and in places where you need to show respect like temples, you should cover your shoulders and upper legs. However, in other places - especially beaches, both Thais and foreigners wear vests and shorts and Thai men don't wear shirts.
