Hello Barry 😊

How comfortable a bus journeys in Indonesia can be depends on which route you are taking. The bus journeys I took in Sumatra were incredibly uncomforatble. I went from Dumai to Bukkitingi and back.

On one of the journeys, I got so tired I just had to sleep. I wedged myself as tightly as possible, because the busses swerve so much, and bump in so many pot holes. I still worke up with a burise on my shoulder.

If you are going along one of the rough routes, then take mini busses, rather than national busses. They are a bit more comfortable and they only put 6 people in each, while the the national busses can be so crowded, that sometimes there are even plastic chairs in the aisles to accomodate more people. Also, one of the busses I took arrived 5 hours late, causing me to miss the last boat of the day back to Malaysia, so dont rely on any bus but one with a reputation for being fancy to get you there on time.

So, my advice if you value having any shred of comfort is to only take national busses on main highways, and make sure you use a bus company with the most comfortable busses. Otherwise, consider flying.
