Cheapest ways to call home!
12 years ago, June 26th 2011 No: 1 Msg: #139263
I'm going to the above countries for a month, but want to be able to call home on a regular basis to talk to the boyfriend. I'm with 3, and plan to call them tomorrow to see if they have any hidden deals on roaming, but currently it looks like it would be £2 a min to call!!

How does everyone else call home? Skypes not really a good option tbh, as I don't have a laptop (we're going on a tour with STA travel). Anyone recommend any travel cards or sim cards?

Hey

Skype is the cheapest way - as if they have a skype account too it's free. If someone doesn't have a computer you can buy a package for unlimited calls for a particular country for about 3 pounds a month. You can skype using computers in internet cafes, of which there are loads in every tourist area.

Alternatively, buy a sim card for each country you visit. You can buy a sim card in Thailand for about a pound. Just like the UK, some companies provide cheap international calls and texts. If you head to the MBK shopping centre in Bangkok, one of the floors is full of mobile phone and sim card stalls with various deals. The same goes for Malaysia and Singapore - buy a sim card with deals on international calls.

The issue with roaming is also that you are often charged for incoming calls as well as outgoing, which makes it really expensive. I've also found that my battery goes down faster because the phone is constantly searching for a better signal. You can probably turn this function off but I don't know how!
