We are planning to go to nepal for 9 days in april and looking for ideas on what to do. So far the best seems to fly to lukla, climb up to namche, stay there for a day of sightseeing and then turbing back to lukla. A few questions that lonely planet and the internet (so far) cannot give answers for:

- How likely is the chance of bad weather in mid april which can shut down the lukla airport? Are flights normally fully booked, and do we need advance reservations?

- Is it possible to just book a flight to lukla and start from there, without arranging places to sleep and (if necessary, only going to namche) permit first?

- Can you get a good view mount everest from namche (or not more than a few hours walk from it), or would you have to climb further for that?

- Are there any better options with spectacular views and which we can do on our own?

- If we cannot do this trip on our own, how much time do travel agents need to arrange a trip like this? Is it advisable to book in advance from overseas? Reply to this

Very possible. Just fly in to Lukla and trek up to Tengboche then trek down to Lukla to fly out to Kathmandu. Short and sweet.
Namche is gateway to the Everest. So you will have great view if Mt. Everest with surrounding peaks.

More information....

Its often that the weather would be fluctuating @ high altitude. It would be better if you booked your flights. You don'n need to reserve advance but your travel agent will be booked for you if you contact any travel agency. However cancellation is accepted

It is possible but you need to have arranged schedule for it. That might be effective and helpful

There are many other places from where you can have a view of mount everest, one of the best place is KALA PATTHAR.

Depending upon numbers of people you are arriving and your requirement, travel agents would normally arrange your trip in 2-3 days maximum and YES, it is possible to book in advance from overseas.

We ended up booking the flights, <snip> and a porter/guide in advance at <snip>and had a great time and we were in the end glad having hired someone to take the heavy things and know good places to stay/eat. The flights to/from Lukla were no problem luckily. Just went to Namche and the everest viewpoint, it was tiring enough (if you know that I normally just walk 5 minutes a day to my car and back). Thanks all for the advice!

Hello Doubleduh:-)
Im interested to do the same trip as u have done, cause Im planning to go to Nepal for 9 days and also want to see Everest. I would like to use ur experience, if u wouldnt mind :-)
Can u write for me, please, detailed plan of ur trip, including all the transfers, how did u get ur guide and all ur permissions u needed for this trek?
Also another important things u need to bring with us. Im planning to go with my mum and dad, they are 60 years old, but love hiking and they are in good physical condition.
i would really appreciate ur experience and recommendations, also if u have contacts for people, u hired for carrying baggage.
Thank u very much for ur response:-)
Andrea

We booooked wiith <snip> (cannot mention the name appearantly), I emailed with them before to arrange things. We arrived in KTM and went to Lukla the next morning. From Lukla a porter/guide met us and we walked in 2 days to Namche. The next day we went to the Everest viewpoint and were lucky to have a great view, you have to leave early to have the best chance. The day after that walked back to Lukla and slept there. Then onwards to KTM where we had 2 spare days in case there would be a problem with the flight.

Depending on your budget you don't really need to bring anything, only a good camera. There are restaurants on the way which are quite good and not too expensive, they have blankets and snacks and some even have internet. There is also a mostly working 3G connection throughout the trip.

I think it should be ok for your parents to come, I saw quite a few elderly people walk up there faster than me. :D Reply to this

Sorry for all the crappy spelling, the forum doesn't seem to allow any names or any line that looks like advertising... Reply to this

If i was on time to reply this post, i would suggest to do Pikey peak trekking. Which is one of the best point to voew Mount Everest and other mountains. http://www.nepalhighlandtreks.com/pikey-peak-trekking.html

Tengboche trekking was another option to see good view of Mount Everest. http://www.nepalhighlandtreks.com/tengboche-trekking.html Reply to this
