What is the dirtiest country in the world?

Name the country that you have visited and that is, in your opinion, the dirtiest in the world.

Medan, Indonesia makes Phnom Pehn look like Singapore. It is truly and unpleasant place.

Myanmar, and specifically Yangon, can be an extremely dirty place. Tossing garbage out the window of any moving transportation was the norm, and there were simply no reservations about what environments should function as a toilet. However, because the country just oozes so much unique personality it becomes an almost charming or endearing dirtiness. This seems to be the way many of you feel about India. Reply to this

I havent been to India but Indonesia has to be up there. They seem to clean every morning but there is just dust and rubbish and half dead dogs and burning religious stuff everywhere...all over the pavements, all over the roads and any empty block or space is covered in debri of some sort. Also electricity cables are out of control....all over the place and hanging down. An Australian tourist died there last month from being electrocuted...absolutly no surprise there. Reply to this

I absolutely love India, but it is by far the dirtiest I have seen. I found that as my time there progressed, the trash and dirt got to me more and more.

My father actually was in Haiti last summer doing charity work, and from the pictures he has and what he told me that actually sounded worse (no sewers or trash pick-up), but they are dealing with a lot right now so they get a free pass in my books. Reply to this

Suppose Afghanistan is the dirtiest or in the top of the list. Dumps are everywhere, no sewerage, absolutely devastation. Reply to this

Senegal People. Especially in the north its an open tip. But the worst I've seen is just to the south of the outer suburb of Kaolack the rubbish shone brightly reflecting the suns rays like a great lake. Reply to this

Although this topic has been going for over a year, I didn't feel the need to add to the overwhelming vote for India. However, most of the responses seem to focus on the narrow definition of dirty, charracterized by garbage and other forms of filth. I suggest that what distinguishes India from other garbage strewn countries is best described in this recent blog about experiencing Varanasi: An Assault on Sense and Sensibility. Rudeness and disregard for life (other than the cows) should also factor into the assessment. My own experience visiting Bombay as an eight year old, and seeing vultures pick apart the dead at the temple on Malabar Hill, put me off India for the rest of my life. I have passed through New Delhi's airport many times since...just how many people are required to clean the rest rooms...dozens? And why did they need to fumigate the plane upon arrival...I can understand just before departure? I realize that there are many very nice places in India; particularly along the Himalayas and down south, so I don't wish to discourage others from visiting; just be prepared for an assault on your senses. And as suggested by others, just get away from the cities! Reply to this

I would say India, but Albania was something too. I will remember all my life waking up in a bus and looking by the window at 4 cows eating garbage around the bus. Reply to this

Of the fourty something countries I have visited, India is by far the dirtiest.

Perhaps what i should ask is why India still sticks as a favorite destination despite the filth.

Travelling in India is a mind blowing and addictive experience. Just put a magnifying glass on the good and bad(including the dirtiness) of any country you trravelled in, and that will be the India experience. 😊

I've been to India 3 times, and am keen to go back there again, but will give other countries a turn sometimes, even though they come second to India, when it comes to a great travel experience. Reply to this

We finally made it to India this year and what everyone has said about it is true. We agree that it is the dirtiest country in the world and as Bob has pointed out Chris and Amy's blog called An Assault on Sense and Sensibility should be read.

India has charms that will entice you to deal with and over look the trash, filth and spitting. India is a place you will want to go at least once. Reply to this
