Who is your favorite travel writer and which of their books do you love the most?
I was hoping to get some good recommendation swapping going on for travel writers. I'm a big book worm and I love traveling someplace even when I'm stuck at home between trips.
Who do you guys love to read and why? My answer, Bill Bryson because he is absolutely hilarious and no matter where he goes I know I'm going to enjoy his traveling and he packs his books full of information that I feel like I did all the research myself.
Reply to this Last Chance to See by Douglas Adams. Not just one of the best travel books ever written, but one of the best books, period.
Reply to this I put this in the wrong Forum
The General Travel forum is fine for this sort of thread :-)
I've just started reading
Tea with the Taliban - Ian D. Robinson
Reply to this Totally agree - Last Chance is an awesome book! I actually use it as a text when im lecturing biodiversity. Also like anything by Bill Bryson from a Walk in the Woods to A brief history of everything.
Reply to this Into the Wild by John Krakauer. I first caught sight of this book at a charity shop on one of the feature tables. I picked up the book, sat down, and read the entire work in one sitting. Travel book, journalistic book, nature book, adventure book-whatever you call it, this is one hell of a read, and the debate this book causes is deep and passionate. As a traveler, i understand the drive the main character feels, I understand the native perspective of irritation, of the lack of understanding that nature is brutal and needs to be respected as such.
Reply to this J. Maarten Troost who wrote "The Sex Lives of Cannibals," "Getting Stoned with Savages," and "Lost on Planet China." Great sense of humor!
Reply to this I've read "The Sex Lives of Cannibals" and though it was great. I haven't read his other books yet. Is "Lost on Planet China" good? I went to Beijing last year and I always love reading more about China.
I have heard such wonderful things about "Into the Wild", I even watched the movie, but I haven't read the book yet. I'll move that one up on my list.
Reply to this Maarten writes about his nine month experience backpacking around China, and in his humorous style presents it like it is...dynamic and booming, but with terrible air pollution, expectorating and other filthy habits, etc. Strongly recommended, especially for anyone headed that way. While "The Sex Lives of Cannibals" was about his life on Vanuatu, "Getting Stoned with Savages" is about his life on Fiji.
Reply to this I recently read "Chasing Bohemia" by Carmen Michael about her life in Rio de Janeiro. It's honest, vivid, rich - a really great read. I highly recommend it. I've never been to Brazil and now I'm desparate to go!
Reply to this My first 'travel book' was
Wrong way home, by Peter Moore, and it's still my favourite.
I also like
Vagabonding, by Rolf Potts.
Reply to this I have a new recommendation for you guys. I just discovered Pete McCarthy and his book, "McCarthy's Bar" is a wonderful and rather humorous tale of his time in Ireland.
