Advise on car hire from Phuket
13 years ago, January 1st 2011 No: 1 Msg: #125644
Hey all,

I am traveling to Thailand in 3 weeks looking to rent a car in Phuket and drive the distance to Surat Thani to get the ferry to Koh Samui.

Just wondering if anyone could recommend a car hire company that would let me pick up and drop off the car in different regions?

Does travel insurance cover the cost of accidents?

And lastly, what is the likelihood that I will make it out of the freeway alive?

I appreciate any suggestions.

Thanx ::😊)))) Reply to this

Driving in Thailand is pretty easy. If you do not drive in Bangkok, you won't even need a GPS. Always take the maximum insurance they provide....you never know with all the motorbikes around. I used many time Thai Rent Car, they are one of the local big player, clean new cars, and not bad prices. you have to check if they will let you drop in another location. They have an office in front of the airport in Phuket, but not sure in Koh Samui. Reply to this

The international car rental company "Budget" have 20 locations in Thailand, including Phuket and Koh Samui. For a fee of 3,000 Baht you can pick up in one location and drop off at any of the other locations. All cars come with comprehensive insurance. Your journey should take around 7 hours if you plan to drive direct to Koh Samui without any stopovers, via the shortest route which is about 320 kilometers

I agree with the previous poster, driving is pretty easy in Thailand outside of Bangkok - if you are used to driving on the left hand side of the road.

By the time you have paid for car hire, one way drop off fee, fuel, and car ferry fees, it may be cheaper to fly direct with Bangkok Airways from Phuket to Samui (about 2,500 Baht one way adult fare) Reply to this
