We're looking for the best blogs that have been added to TravelBlog this year, and we need your nominations...
13 years ago, November 30th 2010 No: 1 Msg: #123960
Which blogs have you most enjoyed this year? Who wrote them, and where from? What makes them so fantastic?

We want to find the best stories and photos to have appeared on TravelBlog in 2010. In a few weeks' time we will put a thread with links to the most popular nominations on the front page, where it will stay until February 2011.

But first, we need a shortlist!

It could be the quality of writing or the photography within them that caught your eye - or the adventure of the events that they describe. So our three categories are: Writing, Photography and Adventure.

The six regions are: Europe; Asia; Africa; the Middle East; North and South America; Oceania and 'Oceans and Seas'.

Based on your nominations, we will decide on a winner and runner-up for each of the 18 combinations of region and category. There won't be an overall winner or prize, but we hope to reward each nominated blogger with some extra exposure.

How to nominate blogs:

- Post into this thread a link to the blog(s) you want to nominate, using the code (with the individual diary code instead of the Xs - for example, the code for Ali's Diving with Whale Sharks - OMG! is [diary=418298] .

- Tell us the combination of region and category that you are nominating the blog for (eg. Africa/ adventure or Oceania/photography).

- Briefly say what the blog is about and why you are nominating it.

- You can recommend any blog (apart from one of your own!), as long as it has been added to TravelBlog since January 1st this year.

Note: only one nomination per member, per Category/Continent combination will be accepted.

Over to you....

Sorry just to confirm, I can only nominate someone for one category or one per category?

Wow this is a tough one, so many amazing blogs to choose from :-) Reply to this

You can nominate one blog for each cathegory, by as many bloggers as you want. You can even nominate a blog for each cathegory all by the same blogger if you want. 😊

Wow this is a tough one...

Isnt it! I am having a hard time choosing too. 😊 Reply to this

Right here goes, here are a few nominations so far.

My nomination for the Europe, writing AND photography is Liliram’s Europe blog Same Places, Through The Years (Revisiting Europe)
I love the ‘old & new’ pictures of the same places & the story of visiting the UK for the first time to go to University.

My nomination for Asia, photography is Scott & Anny’s Varanasi blog ? Lengthy contrasts
Some blogs have a few good pictures & some blogs have a few great pictures but I think every picture in this blog is amazing, a great mixture of breathtaking landscape pictures & pictures of the local people.

My nomination for North America, writing is Ana Maria’s blog ? A TEAR FILLED GOODBYE: Reflections on the last 2 years
It sums up all of her experiences of the last two years spent travelling, absolutely amazing.

My nomination for Africa, photography is Peter’s Mozambique blog Rough and beautiful! Diving Tofo!
Great landscape pictures & I’m SO jealous of the underwater pictures of whale sharks & sting rays.

I’m having loads of fun reading through all of the blogs from different continents trying to pick people for different categories.........I know what you’re thinking & you're right, I clearly have WAY too much time on my hands lol.

My nomination for the Middle East, writing & photography is Shane's blog Where Tourists Fear to Tread
Such an amazing blog, I literally could not drag myself away from the computer whilst reading it.
I'm sure a lot of people on TravelBlog would consider themselves well travelled & having experienced a lot of what life has to offer but Shane's blog is a world apart from any other blogs I've read . The pictures speak for themselves :-) Reply to this

Wow! What a great idea! There are countless Bloggers that deserve the 2010 honour, but here are the ones that stuck out for me. I wish everyone a wonderful holiday season and many fantastic future travels.

ASIA:
Best Writer: Anyone who can make me laugh out loud when I read any Blog of his deserves full credit. Tyrone Biggums Hold on to the Corners of Today

Best Adventurer: Of course Ed Vallace wins for best Adventure in Asia. He caught my attention when he wrote about almost dying in Russia, and now he has me with his latest adventures in Afghanistan. Fantastic! A short jaunt in the Afghan Pamir

MIDDLE EAST:
Best Writer/Adventurer/Photographer: The Travel Camel wins all categories in the Middle East hands down. Drastic photos, fascinating locales, and interesting insight. Amazing job Shane! Where Tourists Fear to Tread

More to come as I can remember.... Reply to this

It's not often that a blog is s original, interesting and well-written that it sticks in my mind for a long time after I've read it but Aspiring Nomad's Why We Photograph certainly did. I'd like to nominate it for North America, writing.

Thanks for the nomination Andrea! But it was Mongolia where I nearly died, not Russia 😊

I would like to nominate A Barber in Seville for Europe/ Writing and Europe / Photography, by Liz and Ron. The diary code is 543923. It is about travelling and daydreaming, with beautiful descriptions and photographs. I wanted to be there! (Link not working. Maybe A Barber in Seville will work. Edit made by Mell)

I would also like to nominate Dirty Old Town for South America/ Writing from cabochick. The diary code is 543168. It reminded me about the good and the bad of travelling, how somehow you have a desire to keep exploring even if the place you've discovered is not quite where you want to be.....

I second A short jaunt in the Afghan Pamir for Adventure in Asia. Really great writing and pictures in that one, too.

Asia - Writing.

I'd like to give a mention the the scribbligs of Scottandanny, well written, fantastic attention to detail - usually with a twist. One in particular An alternative guide to India. Part one: Transport should be essential reading to anyone either visiting India for the first time or even those that are used to how it all works - or doesn't as the case may be. :-)

You'd have to go a long way to find a more desciptive writing style than the Grey haired nomads, particularly their most recent jaunt around Eastern Europe (Motorhome News from Europe 39 to Motorhome News from Europe 42 inclusive). The descriptive turns to poetic in Motorhome News from Europe 43 with good use of embedded photos. Actually, their photography is pretty good throughout; I particularly like some of their knockout panoramas.

If I'm not allowed to nominate them for both the writing and photography categories, I guess writing would win by a slight margin.

I think an honourable mention should go out to the Bloggers who take their children on their adventures with them! I know for me, having parents take me all over the world as a child broadened my horizons and made me the person I am today. I would like to nominate Leslie and his parents for diving as a family in Indonesia Diving Gilis with Leslie and the turtles.

...And of course, Sofia and her Dad for travelling the world 'through my eyes.' They are currently in Columbia...I think that is so fantastic! Cartagena, Colombia

Is there a blogger of the year award?

If so Viajerong Pinoy should win a prize as I think he is the most prolific contributor to Travel Blog and doesn't seem to be stopping any time yet. I think he also missed out on the hall of fame for some reason.
Fantastic blogs, pictures and some pretty remote and interesting places off the beaton track!

Hello Sally and Nick 😊

There isnt a blogger of the year award, but you could nominate him to go in the Hall of Fame. The nominations will open on TravelBlogs birthday in April, so look out for the Front Page nominations thread, then. I am surprised he wasn't nominated last time round, but with so many bloggers, good ones can easily go unnoticed. That was one reason the rewards were created - it brings attention to deserving bloggers and blogs.

But, if you can decide which of his blogs were the best this year, go ahead and nominate him for some of the Blogs of the Year cathegory. Not so easy, if you like all someones blogs equally, as I found out, when I was trying to choose my own nominations for the year. 😊

Mel
