I've lived in Bangalore for about 6 weeks now..got 10 days off next month and wondering where I could go in India that's not TOO far from my region (Karnataka) for about a week and that's easy to go on my own (I've no car)..and that's not a beach holiday. Reply to this

Hello Claire 😊

I was in Mumbai and around, last year. It has become much easier for female and in fact any travellers to be there. It is way cleaner, there are way fewer touts and a lot less sexual harassment of travellers there, than the first time I was there 13 years ago.

If you want some relative peace, I would avoid the north of India. I was in Delhi last year too. It is still pretty much like what Mumbai was like 13 years ago.

Here is what I wrote about my last years trip to Mumbai.

1. I live in India and for now I want to travel in India, not fly to a completely different country and travel (Nepal) for now.
2. I already live in a big city (Bangalore) and want to get away from that for a week, so Mumbai doesn't appeal. Reply to this

Hampi isn't far from Bangalore, it is easy to get to, it is small, it is nice and interesting with lots to see and do and it isn't the beach. Also since it is a big backpacker place you can easily find a good place to stay and there are plenty of places to eat. If you want to get away from backpackers as well I can recommend Badami a bit further away from Hampi or go up to northern Karnataka to Bijapur and Bidar, of the beaten track but very nice. It will require a few long and rather bumpy bus rides to get to some of those place. None of these places are on the beach, and all can be reached by public transport and all are do-able for you within a week. Reply to this

Hampi is one night journey in bus, You can sleep on a private couch inside the bus during the journey.. If you travel by Volvo bus like VRL transport . Bus fare is around 300 rupees to 400 rupees from bangalore.

If you want to visit places near to bangalore then ..Mysore, Bailakuppe, Madekere are the best places to visit.

All the best! Reply to this

Claire ................... this post is a bit old ......... hope you are still in bangalore.
As recommended in tril you can visit ooty, kodaikanal and hampi which are very good places and worth vising near bangalore.

Place like munnar/kovalam are also worth watching with full of natural beatuy and Kerla backwaters.
they are also over night journey from bangalore and easily connected through public transport.
