Travel plans for delhi and agra

Hi there folks,

I'll be flying in to Delhi this August, and will have two days to travel alone before meeting up with my friends on the 3rd day, I'll be meeting them in Delhi as well.

The thing is, I really want to see the Taj Mahal, so I'd like to ask,

would it be better for me to take a day trip to Agra and spend all my nights in Delhi?

Or would it be better for me to spend the first night in delhi (as i will be arriving in the evening), head to agra the next day and spend the night in agra, then head back to delhi the following day to meet my friends?

or any other plan, suggestions and advice are all much appreciated!
