Looking for recommendations for great cheap eateries in Mumbai

Hey guys, we fly into Mumbai on 1st Aug and will stay for 2-3 days, prob in Colaba or Fort areas. Can anyone recommend a good Dhaba or local restaurant in these areas? I'm not interested in touristy joints like Leopolds etc., just good authentic Indian cooking. Any tips about great street food locations (Vada pav, Belphuri) also apperciated. Reply to this

You are right about eating in Cafe Leopold. It is not as good as other places for that and more expensive too. But, certainly hang out there. It is a legend in the backpacker and expat world since 1871, rather than a tourist attraction. Everybody who visits Mumbai hangs out there. It has changed quite a lot over the years, but still certainly the place to hang out.

As for restaruants, I never experienced bad food in Mumbai. Even the cheapest restaurants have excellent food.

One of my favourite restaurants is actually near Cafe Leopold. Pity I dont know the name of it. It is on the same side of the street. When you are facing Cafe Leopold, then turn right and walk around 100 M. It has no doors, just a big opening onto the street.
